How do you guys unsolder the screen ?
Do you unsolder both sides with the pin or only the screen side ?
I've unsoldered both sides and removed the pins but I'm still struggling making the screen board apart...

Hi guys: Awesome work you've done here getting these functioning again.
I've attempted to replace my screen, but so far it's not functional: I'll give the full run down:
1: The apexi ECU/Commander are 2nd hand and I've had them in storage for years: Nearing the end of the car build, so I installed it to make sure it powered up: The original screen was readable in the centre, the top and bottom were missing: If I 'squeezed the controller, they would work. After about 15 minutes of trawling menus/data the screen went fully blank.
2: I accepted the screen was dead.
3: Trawl of google brought me here
4: I'm not sure which commander I have:
When I worked I got: Power FC Ver 4.082 FC Commander Ver 3.38
The board is green
The sticker on the back of the commander says FCC NT9609 0372 (I think, the velco was glued over the sticker)
The Main chip is an NEC, with like a grey plastic surround: I believe its a socket.
It is an LG128642 similar/same to what others here appear to have used.
6; My board and display were NOT joined by pins. Just through hole soldered: I messed around with solder wick for way too long before I wrapped the controller in aluminium foil and used a heat gun to separate the two. I don't believe it damaged the board, it all looked good.
7: I joined the board and new display with header pins. With magnifying glass solder points look good.
8: I plug it in to the car: Display lights up (that's good), but there is no text.
9: I cut trace 18 on the display board: Retry the display: Same result, no text visible.
10: Soldered a 2k pot/variable resister between pins 2 & 3: Varying this has an effect on the brightness/color of the display, but there is still no text.
11: With multi meter, I can follow all the tracks on the main board to the header pins, so I've got good connections there: On the board side the ones I can follow all are good: Trace 18 is definitely cut.
12: Checking between pins for shorts, Pins 20/18/2 have continuity, all the others appear isolated.
So any advice is most appreciated! If you need any info or tests done, let me know and I'll get it for you.
Really appreciate the work you guys have done with this, and hope I can get mine running again.

Thanks for your offer; I tried to send email but it was rejected I used ds2wd (at) gmail.com ? So I've tried ds2qwd (at) gmail.com. As per your screen name here.
Good day! Please tell me what part is under x1. While changing the display I accidentally touched this part and it fell off. Now the Apexi Logo is no longer loaded by the commander. Please advise what can be done. Are there any options for replacing this part or do I need a donor?

FYI I did some fooling around with the commander yesterday.
I have a buddy's old commander that we plan on upgrading to the newer blue screen. I also have my EL commander with a dead screen - buttons light up, but the screen stays totally dark.
Taking both apart and comparing side by side the two commanders are VERY different. Totally different circuit boards and the top circuit board with the screen is quite different and actually attached to the bottom board on the opposite side.
I bought a replacement EL screen off Ebay recently ($50) to have on hand for repairing my commander hopefully. The screen makes its connection to the top circuit board with a ribbon cable, that cable looks to be soldered on to the back side of the circuit board with hot glue over it. That joint to me seems very suspicious, I'd like to try and touch up that joint first before replacing the screen.
Attached are pictures of the insides of the EL commander and one showing the replacement screen I got by the commander.

Can test the commander with out car ? Can you tell me the screen?
