I finally got some gauges hooked up and it seem I'm getting 18 volts out of a brand new alternator. I'm figuring that's not good and the new alt is bad. It's causing my battery to weep as well. Any thought?

Is that from the gauge or alternator itself?

What rear end are you using?

That voltage is from the gauges, turns out the new alt was bad. Got another one today, 14.5 volts and all is good. The rear-end is stock housing with hardened 1/2 shafts from http://www.spridget.com/ they have everything you need to build a competition Bugeye rear-end using the original housing and mount points. I'll be using this until I can afford the money and time required to do a complete swap out to a shortened RX rear. Maybe next year!

Ah cool. How much did it cost you (they don't list the prices on their site)? Frontline has hardened EN40B halfshafts for $800 which is a bit pricy for what I need. Frontline is developing a 5 link rear so I'm trying to get something to hold me over and won't snap until then.

Yeah they were not cheap! Around $350 ea I also got the double bearing hubs and a gear set. The entire bill was around $1,500. But compared to the 80 to 100 hours I'd need to shorten and install a donor read-end, I went with the easy one day fix. I will someday do a swap and put this set-up on E-bay if I don't destroy it first

Needs some more help!

I'm trying to hook up an after market mechanical temp gauge but there are two existing temp sensors that I can see. One sensor is under the thermostat and the other is under the oil filter. Which one of these should I use? Any help is appreciated, v/r Dave.

I messed with the carb to try and get it to smooth out, seems pretty good but still breaks up a bit around 4500rpm. I'm not to familiar with these rotary's so let me know how you think it sounds. It smells a little rich! Also what is an idea idle?

Well I finally got an acceptable donor front end to complete my disc brake upgrade. Looks like it's gonna take some time since I have to change out A-Arms, springs, bushings, spindles, king pins, hubs and rebuild calipers. But this is the last big hurdle to getting it on the road this season!

Ideally you want your idle around 750 rpm but anything under a 1000 is sometimes the best you can get with the weber carbs.

Sounds sweet and the lights look good.

I need some help on the muffler, I only have about 20" from axle to bumper and most RX-7 muffler I found are 30" inches long. Does anyone know of any shorter mufflers that would be suitable for a rotary?

Did you go with a fuel cell in the trunk area? If you did, you will probably want to run as big a muffler as you can run sideways under the back of the car. Just about anything that doesn't rely on fiberglass for sound damping. I've made my own or bought fiberglass packed ones and repacked them with rockwool after the glass burns away.

I did remove the original tank and put a fuel cell in trunk, so I can run sideways as you suggested. Not to sound to dumb but how will I know if a muffler contains fiberglass?

Actually most mufflers use fiberglass. They will work for a while but as short as your system is they will burn out and get loud. I don't think performance is going to be much of an issue with your car, I know what 100hp does in these things so your car should be scary fast. Sorry I can't give an exact muffler but I'm thinking the biggest one you can fit will make the car pleasant to drive. As for crossing under the trunk, the stock exhaust comes out the drivers side anyway

Pick a muffler, drive the car for 6 months(maybe a year if its just a weekend toy) and when the exhaust seems loud cut the muffler apart and repack it with rock wool/mineral wool. Its fibers made from basalt rock instead of glass.
