Soooo... my Miata got totaled this morning A big *** dump truck decided to taka a left-hand exit from the right-hand lane. Problem being that I was between the truck and the exit. Law of gross tonnage ftl

Now I REALLY need to get the FD running again, else no more cruises or autox.

The wife and I both walked away fine.

DANG man! I'm glad you two made it out okay, that's truly a small car to encounter a dump truck in. Are you still waiting to take your car to Brian?

Buy a cheap FC?

Yeah, I'm still waiting to take the FD up. He'll finish up Andy's car, then get some of his jeeps prepped for the winter. Once he's done with that we'll coordinate getting mine up his way.

Granted, I still need to pull my dash, replace the dash harness, replace the front body harness, install the engine, install the sakebomb headlights, and reassemble the engine bay.... So I'm ok with a bit of a delay

Sucks.. the wife and I both woke up sore this morning as well. Her back hurts from her neck down to her butt, and I'm sore right around my kidney. Looks like we'll be going to a walk-in clinic after work/school today to get that documented and added to the claim.

I actually found a '97 NA out near Jack that I wouldn't mind picking up as a replacement provided I can get them to lower the price...

Levi -as Ian said, glad you two got out of this alive. A Miata [Man (& woman) In A Tiny Auto] is not a great match up against such a beast. Then again, neither are most cars. Next day and feeling some aftershocks, not surprising unfortunately. Hope it's just soft tissue, soon-to-be over stuff for both of you. Don't forget to keep your hilarious H4YY front tag for your cave, as MD MVA let's you turn in just the rear one without cost. Did you mean '87na ? Bill

Cheers, yeah... It could have been MUCH worse!!! Frankly we're very lucky that it had extra wheels chilling on it's trailer. If they hadn't been there we would have very likely ploughed UNDER the trailer than been run completely over by the rear wheels...

I'll see if the VA DMV will let me keep one of the tags (though I doubt it). Nope, I mean 1997 NA. NA being the 1st generation Miata body style (NA/NB/NC/ND), as opposed to an abbreviation for "Naturally Aspirated"

When things in life **** down your back you've got two options: 1. Get angry about being pissed on, or 2. Be thankful that life isn't pissing down your throat instead...

Glad to hear you and the little lady are ok Levi. I've got a 99.5 Jetta TDI that I'd let go to you for $2k. It's in shitty condition but it's cheap.

Also, A FB I'd sell you that has a roll-cage for added no crush protection. You know, in case the next dump truck doesn't have the extra axle.

Cheers for the offer(s) Rocky, I'm driving the 335i at the moment, and will switch to the focus as soon as I can register it (replace the exhaust). Once I get paid for the miata I'll start looking for a replacement. I've actually seen some decent looking 1.8l NAs that pique my interest

Whoa. Ditto here Levi - glad you both are fine. Very lucky indeed - dump truck and Miata collisions could be a lot worse for sure.

My brand new Mazda3 was sandwiched on 95 in August with only 3k miles on it. I was/am pretty bummed. My first new car in 12 years! I was fine other than a little neck stiffness. My dad suggested a lawyer which I resisted at first. But since it was a brand new car and I had no official police report other than an insurance info exchange sheet from the Statie, I figured I needed to look out for myself. (No police reports in MD if cars are able to be driven away or there's no DUI or injury.) The lawyer hooked me up with a chiropractor and also a neurologist for basic examinations. Overkill I thought, but again, good to check out. I mean, he hit me so hard I slammed the guy in front of me. The kid accepted blame and his insurance took care of my car. And a few chiro visits later, I guess I'm going to get a settlement. I guess everybody gets something - the lawyer, doctors, and myself. It didn't feel exactly right since I was for the most part okay, but ****, my brand new car just sustained $7500 worth of repairs and will never be the same and just maybe my body was out of alignment from the collision and the chiropractor prevented collateral lasting damage. So yes, hopefully you went to the clinic to document any ailments. But if you haven't already, I'd highly suggest a personal injury lawyer. Cover your ***. Private me if you want other details.

I haven't gotten the settlement yet. I'm still trying to get "diminished value" for my car - another item I would have never known about if it wasn't for the lawyer.

I didn't know DMV repo old plates. I've kept a few of my plates before. You can always say that it's on the side of the road somewhere.

How shitty? LOL. I just bought 2004 Jetta 2.0 with a 5-speed and 98K for my "new" DD, it has some deferred maintenance but should last several years and is a platform I know. I paid $2,700 which seemed like a decent deal; I also only had 1 day to find a car.

Yeah... The more I think of it the more I realize that we could have very easily been driven OVER if those center wheels hadn't been there to keep my miata from running under the trailer section.

Damn, that sucks man... Yeah, I'm especially irked now that it seems the other driver is trying to say that I initiated the collision by veering into him.

Yeah, they like for you to turn in your old plates when you sell or otherwise get rid of a vehicle. I've had my license suspended twice now for not turning in plates in conjunction with the insurance company sending in a cancellation letter (first time was when I deployed to AFG, USAA fucked up and DROPPED insurance on my FD, instead of just lowering it to storage mode, the second time was as a result of my moving from MD to VA this past summer. Apparently Progressive sent a letter stating the MD policy was cancelled, but neglected to mention that it was immediately replaced by a VA policy )

Shocker; did you get a police report, was he ticketed for failure to pay full time & attention?

What is that?
Additional money back to you as the owner of the vehicle, it's the estimate of the gap you would come across when trying to sell the "damaged" labeled car in the future.

They wont go after you as long as you call and tell the the vehicle was sold, disposed, or traded. I've never turned in plates except to get registration credit.

I did get the report. No idea if he was issued a citation or not though.

Ah, gotcha. I've just been looking at what it would cost to buy another Miata in the same condition (damned good working order, and unmolested) and I was going to push for replacement value based on that.

Gotcha. Yeah... That ****'s happened to me twice, both times I didn't realize it until MONTHS after they suspended my license. Great...

Exactly, the car is fixed and all but it's resale value is greatly diminished. Just by asking for this from Liberty-Mutual (the at-fault insurance), they offered $1200. Some insurance companies completely ignore you but they're supposedly one of the better ones. I went back to the dealer to see how much to trade in for a 2017 and they offered me $18k for the car. Comparable 2016s go for $23k on average. I also paid a guy $249 for a professional appraisal (Auto Analyst | The Onsite Auto Inspection And Appraisal Service - shameless plug) and he also estimated its value at $18k. He's got a cool little gadget to measure paint depth and showed me everywhere it's been repainted. Armed with this data, L-M upped their offer to $2450, still a low-ball offer. So now I have to get another lawyer to try to recoup the $2000 difference between my true loss and their offer.

^ It does. But then again, it's "just a car." So it's already damaged goods and "used" three months into its life. No biggie. (It feels better to keep telling myself that.) I have my health which is most important. And you and your wife as well Levi. Call up a PI lawyer yet?

My neighbor has a nice auto-cross ready silver Miata if you're interested. He bought it from an enthusiast so it's in great condition. He's a car enthusiast as well so has maintained it nicely. I think he wants $6k for it though, a bit on the high side. But that does include a hardtop at least. It's not really for sale, but he does keep asking me if I want to buy it.

Very true on having your health health.. I've not called up a Lawyer yet, gunna play it by ear initially. If the other company digs in their heels and tries to avoid taking responsibility for the event then I'll get a shark involved. I'm really not trying to get rich off this, I'll call it good so long as any medical issues are sorted out, and I'm able to replace the Miata with a like model.

Sucks, because I *know* they are going to try ******* around on the cars value. Thankfully there is enough literature out there highlighting the benefits of the 1st gen miatas that, along with ACTUAL local FS adds and asking prices, I should be able to get enough out of it that I'll be able to get another one. Unfortunately I've had to play the "replacement value" game with Ins Co's a couple of times as a result of having motorcycles stolen or totaled.

The tough part will be finding another unmolested and mostly stock Miata in good condition.

I'll def keep you/your neighbor in mind when I finally get the insurance check. Having a hard top would be nice!!! Do you know what year your neighbors Miata is?

Not looking to get rich either, but for sure hoping to lessen the pain of having my new car creamed by an inattentive 17-year-old driver.

My neighbor's Miata is a '99. Upgrades and notables are as follows: "all the sport edition interior transplanted," HID, excellent condition hard and soft top, torsen diff, bigger brakes, 949 racing wheels, glass rear window with defrost, AC blows cold, Bilstein HD shocks, Flying Miata's front sway bar, FM frame rails. Most of the upgrades were to improve handling. (He's quite active on the CDC events.)

It's a very clean ride and I would be interested in getting it if I wasn't so practical.

Hope everybody had a good Christmas this year. I'll be better at posting in here more often. You know, when the Navy isn't sending me to central California all summer long and the speed 6 isn't broke down.

Thinking about finally starting on my FC again soon. Just need the time and some extra hands of knowledgeable people.

Fun time today mounting my newly acquired kit. Now to hunt for some nice rim/tire combo to fill it out nicely.

I got my car back from IRP tonight!!! I've got to break in the engine, install a better IC, then go back for the power tune. I'm curious to see what numbers this 8374 will put down @ 1 bar with no WM.

$18 a day and $55 on the weekends. 6 weeks of living in a convection oven sucked ***. I could literally never go back there in my life and be fine with it.
