Finally ready to be a useful member
Hello my fellow rotor heads! I've been scouring this site for just over a year, expanding my knowledge repairing and maintaining my RX-7. I figured it's about time to actually become a useful member. I bought my RX-7 In October of 2007, and took a big risk buying "AS IS" from an engine importer. I really wanted an FD, but couldn't afford an LHD, and with growing concern for the amount of time that the Government would allow for importing JDM cars, I decided to bite the bullet and take the plunge into the frustration that would become insuring a RHD vehicle in Ontario. So between two summer jobs, and the beginning of the last year of University, I went ahead and made room in the garage for my new, 15 year old, toy. It's been a wild ride so far on and off the road with this car, but there's nothing more I enjoy working on or driving.

Well since I bought it off an engine importer, the importation fee was included in the cost of the car. I paid $8,000 plus tax for it. Since they import engines, as well as cars they just rammed the shipping container with both. Now as I understand it the cars had to be imported for road use, not parts. Once it is registered as a parts car, it cannot be registered on the road. Mind you this is for Ontairo, every Province is a little different, and has their own rules on these types of cars (RHD), so I'm not sure what it would be like for you. Here we (for the time being, Quebec already has a ban on RHD cars), there is a 15 year rule. Basically if the car is 15 years or older, there's no problem importing them, they classify them as collector or special interest cars. Hope that points you in the right direction, for me now the insurance part is the biggest headache.

Hope what's written above answers some questions. As for the roads, they say there are two seasons in Canada, Winter & Construction. I'm just outside Toronto, so roads here are pretty good, don't know where in Canada you were driving, but around here they're pretty good.

Thanks for the welcome, I'll try to answer the question that seem to come up quite frequently. Where did i import from? This one usually sparks quite a discussion, Tiger Japanese. I knew that they didn't have the best reputation just by scanning the forums. However I decided to take the risk, so far things have been pretty good. I knew more or less what I was getting myself into, "AS IS" sums it up pretty good. I found my car about 2 months after I bought it (Mesa rims are very unique) on the Tyee Imports website, they gave the car a rating of 3 or 3.5 out of 5 I think.

Right now working on a classic insurance for the car, should be cleared up by mid July (fingers crossed). The car could sure use a good run, missed the meet at Sherway Gardens.

Ok, update, and I need a couple of more posts. The car is running better than ever. Got the pesky 3000 RPM hesitation fixed. Seems that there was something faulty in my gauge cluster causing the throttle to go dead between 3500-4500 RPM. A used gauge cluster did the trick.

Really wanted a 300km speedo, but this will do for now. The car ran so well I decided to take it for a drive up to Huntsville and stop off at the Drift comp. at Bowmanville.

Didn't need to separate anything. It falls under a 15 year rule where you can import a car that's older than 15 years old. It's considered a hobby car, so they aren't too stingy about it here.
