Agreed
Yes I agree. My car has been a project since I bought it even under waranty. Under warranty the project was to find someone who knew how to work on such a advance complicated turbo system. Next was how to make more power. Then pop who to rebuild the engine. Currently how to make the.car have more reliable, usable power. Well.sometimes I get upset and think the hell with it. Then I fix it and drive it and dont.want.to get out of it. Love porsches but qould not sell my rx7 to buy one. It would have to an additional to my rx7.

^ Simon, I love RX4s. You now have two of the coolest vehicles around in the REPU and the 4. Nice choices. How about posting up a pic of the 4 here in this thread? Too lazy to go looking. Actually, too busy with the resolution of some crazy stuff here for the wife and me.
I have taken a more relaxed approach over the past year to the car. It gets done when it gets done and we all know "done" is a relative term as these things are never finished. I've been stockpiling little fit and finish pieces to install once the car is back in my possession. Fun looking at the little pile but will be even nicer to have the parts on the car. Most are things you will never notice as they are clips etc. but I think they will give the car a more polished appearance.
Th car should be back any day - the delay has been in widening out the front fender flares. Just had the tool we need (an industrial stapler with an outward "clinch") show up so we can wrap that part of the project up and get the car back to me.
Spintriangles - when did you buy your car? Warranty as in Mazda warranty? If so, you are like me as I bought the FD new in 94. My biggest issue back then was finding a reliable mechanic to work on the car as the dealer guys knew nothing about rotaries and the car would always come back more broken than when it went into the dealer.

Challenges
Bought the car 2/98 from mazda. I am the second owner. First owner was a dentist. 63000 miles on it and I wisely got the extended finger, I meant warranty from mazda. I understand the.whole bring it to the dealer and they start the guessing game I went through that also. Hell even some of the best mechanics in my area, without calling no names knew the motor but did not understand all the other tbings. For example one vacuum line out of place and the car would loose boost. Thank God that mechanic has learned from experience and is the best around this area for sure.

As far as dealers, the worst that happened to me was going to the dealer for a 30,000 mile service. During this, they changed out the coolant and unknown to me, broke the overflow container in the process. How the heck this is possible I don't know, but I picked up the car during a lunch break and drove it back to the office, about 5 miles away. By the time I parked, the car was spewing coolant everywhere. Called, the dealer and they told me to drive it back in. Had them trailer it back to them for repairs and never went back.
Yep, just waiting on getting the car back. Went over to see the car on Friday. The OC stapler I bought off of Amazon was not up to the task and the mechanic secured a better one so he's now good to go.
Should be any day now.
Yes. He did a great job. He and Kilo are having issues (have no idea what's going on) so had some troubles just recently getting the two of them to work out the repaint on the car. Something got on the car while it was at Kilo or the original paint job had prep issues and this led to the tension. I tried to help work to out but the end is, Carlos repainted the car. I still need to wax it as the paint was too new to do this when I picked it up.

wow
David funny that you had a problem at mazda with braking the overflow tank. I onced picked up my car from mazda and it was leaking coolant from the radiator. Of course they took no responsibility and I ate it. Turbos went out during warranty and they claimed the motor was also bad. Haha the motor was fine, but hey who was i to argue with them. Motor and turbos replaced under warranty. David Kilo and Carlos having tension is not good.Hopefully they will resolve it. I was thinking of.getting my car painted by Carlos and then from there to Kilos. Dont want my car back til it is done.

^ It didn't take me long to realize the dealer had no knowledge or experience with working on the FD. They just couldn't seem to work on the car without breaking something else.
The coolant issue was bad but the most blatant experience was when my sunroof inside cover was rattling and I took the car in to have that adjusted. Picked up the car, they claimed I was good to go, and I got no further than turning right out of the dealership, where I had a bit of a bump to go over. The bump caused the cover to fall off and hit me in the head. I was pissed, so I turned around, parked the car and opened up the glove compartment to retrieve the receipt (they told me they put the receipt in there). When I did this, the glove box fell out - they had somehow broken this as well. Made them stop what they were doing and repair the car on the spot. Crazy stuff.
You have a good plan in having the car painted by Carlos and then Kilo working on it. Pretty much what I did. I too hope they can resolve their differences but that shouldn't stop you as you can deal with Carlos and then Kilo.

Just got through reading this thread from the beginning. BTW, you started this build when I was in middle school...... Talk about build of a lifetime. You've had quite the interesting experience over the years, glad you made it out alright! Your FD looks great! Hopefully I'll get to see your FD at one of the sevenstocks in these upcoming years if you ever make it back out to cali again lol.

I did some research here to find out some tracks, in confusion, ban all "glycol", meaning either ethanol or glycol based. This would mean all types of coolants, regular, Engine Ice, or Evans, would not be allowed. I've never been to one of these tracks or if I have, they've never asked as I'd think most cars would not be able to go on the track.
Any way, car is back with me and I am busy piecing it back together. Getting ready to head out to do some startup tuning.

Will post an update soon with pics but for now, anyone have a wiring diagram for the taillights? If not, I'll go the multimeter route, but I need to identify which wire is which on the 4 prong taillight socket. It's for one of my crazy projects.
TIA!
TIA!

Just catching up on your progress from over the summer. I don't get on here as often as I'd like, but when I do I always check in on this thread. Car is coming along very nicely it seems, even with the hiccups here and there. Are you planning on running some form of clear bra or finish on the front for preventing rock chips on the highway? I didn't see anything mentioned but probably a worthwhile investment for the amazing paint work you've had done.

^ Thanks for the post and for reading this thread. As an aside, I am originally from Buffalo, or Cheektowaga to be exact. Was back for a family reunion a few years ago.
I've been thinking about a clear bra as I used to have one on the car. Should have already done it as I dropped a tool the other day on the front bumper and now have my first chip in the paint. Such is life.
Been doing a bunch of work on the car. Mostly electrical stuff like cleaning up wiring. Just spent a week or so adding in sequential taillight modules to sequence the rear lights like a Mustang. Could never have done it without Gen2n3's help. Has taken me the better part of a week to figure out the install and wire it all up. Now in process of cleaning up the wiring and putting the trunk back together. Maybe tomorrow I'll finish this up.
I then need to diagnose a wiring issue with the radio. The head unit has become possessed and it's cycling on and off. So I am going to pull it out and check the power and grounds (I am betting there is a ground problem).
After this, I am down to just a few things on the list before I take the car to be tuned.

No kidding! I grew up in Amherst but just bought a house in Cheektowaga last year. Sucks to hear about the chip in the bumper, get it touched up and throw a clear bra on! Everyone I know who has one raves about them.
