Thumbs up Track fun runs… well kinda fun…lol

Saturday I threw on the drag radials and headed out to Orlando Speed World.
So this time boost is at 22psi on E65. I’m hoping for a 10.99 or better for a pretty tame street FD.

Well didn’t happen, kinda bummed. I know it has the potential but that’s ok.
The ACT HDSS didn’t like it and slipped in 2nd-4th gears.
I stayed in the throttle and knew it’d be my only run of the day so I just let her eat…lol
I’m sure the 4yrs old clutch is probably just worn and tired and the extra boost with sticky tires just did it in.

Video of the run.

Draggy in car video… slippage extreme!!

Draggy slip

Track time slip

Pretty neat the Draggy and track slip are very close.

I’ll be dropping the trans this week to see the carnage.
At idle you can hear lose metal bits in the bell housing… kinda reminds me of the ice cream truck music. Ding…. ding..ding

Nice run! Easily into the low 11s with no slippage. I'm really impressed with how accurate dragy is to the timeslip.

The car sounded like it had a CVT in the video
Why so much smoke during the run?

Thx I was really hoping for a high 10 sec run.
Last time I ran there she went 11.8@118 on 15.5psi so with 22psi it would’ve been interesting to see the time.
Yeah Draggy is on point with the time slip… so close to each other.

It reminded me of a slushy automatic.
I assume the smoke is slippage from clutch disc, in between the pressure plate and flywheel. I was super easy on it driving home and didn’t smoke at all.
Gonna start to pull the trans today.

Oh man. What brand is that? Possibly caused by antilag/2 step?

Damn Steve, that's some serious exhaust backfire going on there!

Tanabe Medallion not true 3” though

Pete, I’ve never had a back fire or issues like that.
I believe it’s from back pressure.. look inside the Tanabe Medallion exhaust( which I thought it was a true 3” exhaust) and it’s only about 2 1/4 diameter inside the muffler.
Definitely not good for higher boost levels so I think the exhaust found a weak link in the system and self vented …lol

Its a RX7store.com midpipe, I believe its a magnaflow in the center.....about 6 years old.
I haven't used Anti-lag or 2 Step with this setup.
Maybe too much back pressure for the boost I was running with the Tanabe but don't really know though.

Thx Steve

Now I'm a little worried since I'm also running a Tanabe Medallion catback, I too thought it was a true 3" all the way thru exhaust, but your pictures prove it isn't. I guess that explains why the Tanabe system is so nice & quiet!

You’ll be good… just don’t go chasing more boost like me
Mines was perfect at 15-16psi.
And I also love the quietness of the Tanabe but she don’t flow for higher boost levels.

I love the sound of the Borla X1R used in a midpipe. Enjoyed it more than the Magnaflow.

Cool to see that you are taking this down the drag strip. See you in deals gap in April?

I've heard that before but never got to run one... I assume it has to be welded in?

Yes. You can have your fabricator / welder dude (or yourself if you have the skillz) cut out the old Magnaflow muffler and weld in the new Borla. Probably best to be fitted and tack welded while on the car for best fitment. Then removed to finish welding all around.

Thx, that’s what I was thinking.
Appreciate you sharing

The wife did get me this for Christmas(she’s the best) but my skills are not ready to tackle that job yet… still learning.
I do have a local buddy that welds and can take care of it.

It’s a PrimeWeld TIG 225X, tons of great reviews about it.

I have one of those sitting in the garage as well.
I have yet to open it. It's been 2 years iirc...
Lots of ambition. Not much time.

I'll third the Primeweld. I picked it up a few months ago, and I have practiced about 5 hours with Tig on Aluminum. I have a long way to go, but I'd like to make my own intercooler pipes without a fabricator. Good luck!

Oh man…. 2yrs! I don’t think I could be that patient.
I’d be itching to try it and call out of work to find some time lol.

On my 20B, I have two of the Borla X1R mufflers installed, one as a mid-pipe and one as the muffler:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...0bf718bc2.jpeg

The midpipe has been on the car for about five years - replaced the melted Magnaflow one - and the muffler and carbon exhaust tips since 2020. Then again, I haven't been doing much driving in the last few years as I am overseas.

Borla mufflers are top-notch quality, a significant improvement over Magnaflow.

Thanks David,
Definitely interested in doing the Borla X1R mufflers... also your twin carbon exhaust tips look great.

You coming to DGRR 2024? Ill be there

Hello. My pleasure. As for DGRR, I want to be there, but I am not confident the DCT transmission swap will be completed and sorted out. I was promised last year, spent lots of money to travel from overseas, only to be disappointed.

So, I am in a wait-and-see mode with the latest promised delivery by the end of February. If that happens, you will see me at DGRR.

Transmission is out

Had some free time and was able to remove the transmission, clutch & flywheel couple of days ago.

The clutch is all crap but I got about 6yrs of use on this clutch setup and they were for the most part hard years. I wasn’t easy on it.

Rear main seal had a slight leak so I’ll be replacing that before the new setup goes in.

Steve
