Went to Mexico to get the first shake down run with the H7 Rotary DCT.
Video doesn't do it justice, but my first impressions is............... Oh man, I'm liking it
Looking good, Steven! Very smooth acceleration it seems. Bravo!!
How tricky is the low rpm tuning/driving feel? Any jerkiness or bucking that can't be removed?
P.S. Had me fooled initially at the 'Mexico' comment. Jaja
Thanks man.
1st impression is there is some low rpm jerkiness. I believe the trans is still learning and I need to dial in the torque settings too.
Also need to wire in the drive mode logic button I’ll be able to change the rpm shift points and how DCT behaves.
Still in the infancy stages with it
So far so good!
Went for a drive and did a couple of pulls to 6k rpm’s.
Crap!!! This DCT is so much fun… There’s no, On and Off feeling like with a manual trans.
It just keeps pulling and poppin through the gears effortlessly.
What a feeling!!
Automatic Turbo cars usually have that affect on people that have never driven them before. DCT is a step further than just the standard auto. I remember taking the 6 speed Supra guys for a ride in our auto Supra and it blew them away there was no drop in boost between gears, just an almost linear acceleration through the gears. I still prefer a stick for my FD but if I built another one aside from my OEM++ theme I would want to go DCT for sure and modernize everything since I already have my heritage build car.
Here’s two logs of 3rd to 4th gear pulls @around 15.5psi boost range to compare the stock 5spd vs BMW DCT.
FD3s stock 5 speed….
BMW DCT
How much faster is the DCT vs FD 5spd?
Here's some real world, garage guy somewhat accurate data
I tried to get a fair comparison between the two but the points don’t exactly line up because I don’t need to lift with the DCT.
Also, I choose 3rd to 4th because it’s probably one of the fast shifts you can do with the manual, it’s just straight down.
Finally look at the boost(blue line) between the two… major difference!
Looking at the logs here’s the break down.
5spd .508
I used the point where I came off the throttle to where it showed it was in 4th gear.
RPMs were still dropping a little off from the gear change though.
DCT .143
Since I don’t have to come off throttle I used the start of the 3rd gear change to where the rpm’s dropped.
So .508-.143= .365 difference and say you do 1st to 4th gear pull then .365x3= 1.09 sec difference in shifting
Obviously, it's just spitball math but you get the idea.
I’m still dialing in the tune some and next I’ll be getting some E85 to turn up the boost again.
Just sharing my experience…. Steve

We sold his R3 after he went to Japan and picked up this 93 touring roller from my buddy Tito.
So it’s a great car and a solid base to build from.
Body has 88k miles but needs short block and paint.
While he’s overseas I’ll be slowly getting it ready for him.
Single turbo, Stockport, Haltech, vmount and other goodies.
We’ll keep it about 350rwhp on 93pump.
