I can see why some people cynical over time. Spend a week on a Honda forum and you'll understand. My "forum life" began in HOnda forums.

When one of my friends tried to look up a problem regarding his FC (coolant buzzer) he'd skim the topics, skipping over things that may have answered his question. When he went into a thread, he'd skim really fast and if nothing was cool, he'd move on, even though something in there might have answered his question.

Ok, alter ego to the side, haven't we been through this before? This smells like some of the previous threads grouped together into one. We hate people that don't search and nothing can ever be done about it. Most people have the commonsense of an ameba, and we have to deal with it. We certainly can't stop kids from joining the forum. After all, stupidity breeds stupidity, and these kids probably have the type of parents that go out and buy their kid a violent video game specifically marked For mature Audiences and then they bitch to the video game manufacturer that it's a violent game

This place is full of stupid people. I have to weed myself through stupid people everyday, and the only alternative to not having to deal with them is locking myself in the house. Then I come online and MORE stupid people come up!

We gotta face it......this place or any other place will ALWAYS have turds

So dont you think we should get a section just for the above average members to hang out in?

I lurk around in the Single T forum mostly or the Forsale section. too many dumb posts anymore that could be easily found by the search function. I don't bust on someone for their post, just don't bother to reply anymore.

I just use this forum for its search cababilites ... I rue the day when I put myself on the line and say anything, so that I can be slammed by some other self proclaimed know-it-all. However I enjoy the resources I find. I know what I know and I'm not here to prove anything. But yes we need to weed out the common arguements and slamming on this forum. Also RX-7 related topics might help as well. The third gen section has become a HELP!!! board for far to long best thing is to break it into a new section for all RX-7's than systimatically break it down the the gens kinda like the ENGINE MANAGEMENT FORUM.

Just my 2 cents.

ohOH i TALKED! <FLAME SUIT ON!>

Some interesting outside perspective for all of us to think about. There are many facets which determine quality, maturity, and insightfulness of posts and questions - age, availability of car, techinical ability required to own car, cost of car and it's relation to age and maturity, etc...

I think the FA guys have a nice setup that we should highly consider:

Basic section.

Advanced section.

No voting to get in, no requirement to post in either - but if you post a stupid question in either it's going to get closed, re-routed, etc.

clayne...those forum screen grabs and the differences you pointed about between them was your best post to date IHMO.

interesting...the differences in the threads between the different groups was interesting. Ours is so "fd" it is amazing. the m3 groups biggest concern was which signal covers to get. the nsx group was overall devoid of technical problems compared to the 3rd gen section on no pistions. cool stuff to see...and a good way to compare cars in a way. I got a taste of owning them all just by seeing the overall (though brief) picture of the communities. I still love my fd even if some of those groups dont have the headaches.

Actually, what we need is someone to do what robinette and ciriani did with the big list, pull the info from the posts, create a how-to section (air box, hot air out, torque brace, non-seq switch, etc) an info section (intercoolers FMIC vs. SMIC, temp/pressure drop, ECU's, boost controllers, boost troubleshooting ...), a good FAQ (first mods, safe stock boost, etc..), and links (robinette, ciriani, wade, iluvmyrx7,vanditmars,max cooper...). Then those "stupid questions" would go away. I find it difficult to find the info I'm looking for with search, and I've written search engine applications.

I'm a 240 owner and a regular at Freshalloy. I lurk here for all the DIY/fabrication threads, and I agree that you really need to split your 3rd gen section.

The basic/advanced 240 sections are relatively new on Freshalloy. I think they work fairly well. What's considered advanced is usually left up to the moderators, and it does evolve pretty much daily, but I feel like it has become more "advanced" since it's inception.

The basic section is much more lenient towards newbies and people who don't "search" while the advanced section is strict. I think the same would function well here.

The amount of posts here could warrant the split alone. Unless you visit daily, it's hard to keep up with threads because they get buried so quickly by "I just bought an rx7", "which dp/md is best", or "why does Jim always make me cry?"

Just an opinion from a lurker,

-john

clayne, excellent post. apperently rx7club is not as bad as some others. and the idea of a basic section, and advanced is great. we have the archived posts now, which is kinda the same concept, but the reg. and adv. sections would be nice.

i dont post here much becuase most of what i would post would end up not being constructive or helpful, probably cranky more than anything. ive been dealing with these cars since 95-96, and in that intervening time it seems like the questions have stayed mostly the same. maybe i'm tired of asking/answering the same question over and over again.

to be fair this somewhat applies to the 2nd and 1st gen sections although not as badly

Well, I'll add my few cents into this thread:

First, thanks for all the positive comments.

Next, I don't think having an advanced and non-advanced section is the solution. Why? Well, in the short term, yes, it would seem to make things better. But sooner or later, the people posting in the advanced section will think the topics aren't advanced enough and we'll be right back here again. I'm sure that in the past people thought this section was advanced and no doubt it was.

Unfortunately, most of us are now not travelling in uncharted territory. Let's face it, the car is 10 years old so the chances of someone trying something *new* or *innovative* is not likely. There is nothing stopping people from "posting advanced topics" or replying to them. If you want this forum to be better, make it better by helping instead of complaining.

IMO, the solution is education. We have too many people passing on myths ("oooh, three mods, your engine is going to explode"). Unfortunately, we can't stop all bad advice, but hopefully we can educate the other forum members to pass on better information.

I look at it as the more newbie questions I answer, hopefully, that newbie will then in turn be able to contribute to the forum by answering that same question for another newbie. Thus stopping me from having to answer it again. Hopefully the cycle then repeats itself.

We will always have lazy and or ignorant members. That's just life. However there are a few things that I think would make the forum a better resource, one of which was brought up earlier:

* How-To section

I would like to add a How-To sub-forum where we can put together good how-to's similar to Rob and Scuderiaciriani's sites but with more pictures and more up-to-date.

We have the archives but the problem is 90% of the pictures aren't going to be there forever (if they are even there now). If the forum hosts the pictures, the How-To's would be around for as long as the forum is here. Something like this would cut down on quite a few of the "How do I do this, I searched and can't find what I need" questions. clayne has been putting up some great how-to's lately and it would be a shame not to have them here (if he for some reason sells his car or loses interest in it) as well as other How-To's.

I proposed this last year when I first became a moderator, however, I got ZERO response from the other admins/moderators about it....

i agree with the pics arent around forever thing Kyle, also, who would put that section together? i know i dont have the time.... many admins dont even have the time to reply to things (i am sure you know what i am refering to) and it will also rquire some bandwidth. who is going to pay for it?

They way I see it working is that people put together their "How-To's" and submit them. An admin/moderator would then approve or dissapprove the submission (similar to the photo gallery) and then create (or move) the entry into the How-To section.

Heck. I'd be more than happy to do it. It doesn't have to be an instantanous accept/decline so there would be no rush for the moderators, but at least there would be a place to find REAL information instead of attempting to weed through the "crap".

I think that's what turns off most people from searching. This forum, right now, is like trying to figure out how to spell a word using dictionary; if you don't know how to start the word, then the dictionary isn't going to help. The same thing here which is if a person doesn't know where to begin, this forum really isn't that helpful at the moment.

I think a how to section is a GREAT idea, i think the other administrators should take note of this and attempt to do it
