Im not old by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the downfall of the old, knowledgeable people on this forum is directly related to the rise in F&F popularity, as well as APC getting ahold of drifting. Also I think the Rx7Club lounge, and some of the people in it have a big part in making people who know alot about these cars go away. I mean if I was very experienced and was on this board to help people, I wouldn't be too encouraged by the fact that many people sign up just for the lounge, and then act like theyre twelve. And I guess because more and more kids are turning 16 and their parents are shelling out money for a car they know nothing about, so the kids get into trouble, and then come here, and get impatient, as seen in a quote in this thread.

I haven't been on here much recently. I've been around for I guess a few years. I remember when the forum only had about 300-500 members registered.
Most of the posts are crap now and the car's image and demographic has changed. It used to be sort of a gentlemans car and is now somewhat of a rice magnate. Highschool kids can afford cheap FDs on McDonalds wages and seem to care more about how loud a BOV is than traction or handling.

i remember when there was no forums and it was that big list only. the behavior here is really no different. I blindly questioned the big list about five years ago in regards to doing a v8 swap. I got ten pages of hate emails and one half baked email from grannys.

people were actually more naieve as a whole about these cars back then. the performance group seemed much tighter and closer but outside that group the rest of the fd crowd was struggling just to find answers about their cars.

believe it or not, this forum helps a lot of people...me included. I no longer only have the option of using www.scuderiaciriani.com or the big list for answers.

Im all for an advanced tech section. I vote mahjik and jimlab as moderators. between jims **** ss rule mongering humor and mahjiks mastery of customer service and decency, we should have a nice little section there which isn't cluttered with threads like this one!

Hey guys,

As I mentioned above, there are a lot of changes being discussed. On the subject of having an "Advanced" section, give me an idea of what you are considering "Advanced" posts?

And Jim, don't link me to your V8 thread!

I will oppose "advanced" sections that screen members. If the problem that people want solved is to get rid of repetitive or misinformed posts you don't fix that by making a new section, you fix that by inventing some sort of useful FAQ and imposing some "quality" standards on the posts placed by users.

The purpose of the board IMO is to share experiences to help us all. We shouldn't segregate it into sections which only allow those deemed worthy to participate in discussion. We should however insist that posters overall exhibit some forethought with their questions and we should insist that the vast majority of this information be pertinent to RX-7's.

I agree that any new format should not screen out the less informed. The only good way to become more informed is to be able to read previous posts, and to be able to ask questions when the answers are not apparent.

One basic problem is that not everyone has the same level of mechanical/engineering common sense/feel. That, however, should not prevent the less informed from trying to learn as much as they can.

Why don't we just go down the list of what's currently on the first page of the 3rd gen. forum?

Not Advanced
1. Apexi N1 Dual Installed (Review with Pics)
2. Pics of my FD w/ '99 body
3. MoTech ems
4. Which is the return line
5. And The NEW owner of GODZILLA is...
6. radiator hose diameter
7. WTF did i get?
8. East bear sleek light lexan covers??
9. ouch...my old car is on ebay
10. HKS intake and stock BOVS what to do
11. What exactly does it mean when you car is giving out white smoke at startup??
12. anyone else interested in buying a kirk racing roll bar?
13. weird power? need help?
14. Crap gas in OK
15. 929 Master Cylinder

I think you get the general idea.

Advanced
1. Questions before undertaking Turbo rebuild...
2. CAst Iron welding cracks on TT manifold? Can manifold be purchased seperately?
3. my latest project *pics*

The only reason I list the first two is because rebuilding your own turbos - this is the guy with the out-of-control signature - is advanced, i.e. beyond most people, and not just a simple bolt-on. In the second case, the manifold thread could evolve into a discussion of techniques for welding cast iron. They have potential to be "advanced", but neither is yet, in my opinion.

93BlackFD's posts usually aren't (like how to suck a t-shirt into your turbos), but I list his project thread as an honorary advanced topic because he's actually discussing how to build your own IR heat lamp for curing powder coat in this one.

What is "advanced"? It's harder to define "advanced", but it's probably topics that are beyond the abilities or knowledge of the majority of members. It's easier to define what is not, probably.

1. How much horsepower will my setup make?
2. What will my car run in the quarter mile?
3. What's the best sounding exhaust?
4. Pictures of my latest <fill in the blank>
5. What is this <fill in the blank>?
6. Who bought Godzilla's car this week

The 929 master cylinder thread could have been advanced if bore size had been discussed and the volume of fluid needed for brake calipers with pistons of size X and so on... but asking where to buy one or a request for a part number is obviously not advanced.

From the CamaroZ28.com site, here's the "blurb" for the Advance Tech forum...

Advanced tech discussion. Stroker motors, Major rebuilds, etc. HIGH-END DISCUSSION ONLY - NOT FOR GENERAL TECH INFO

A sticky in the forum declares clearly what is in and out of bounds...

NOTICE: What this forum is for, and what it is NOT for. PLEASE READ!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems there is some confusion about what this forum is for. Maybe this announcement will clear things up a bit.

Let's start with the forum description...
quote:
Advanced tech discussion for all years. Stroker motors, Driveline rebuilds, etc... HIGH-END DISCUSSION ONLY

This should clearly define that it is not for picking best cat-back or cold air intake. It also defines that it is for when you are building a stroker motor, completely rebuilding the transmission or driveline. We are limited on how much we can put in the forum description, so we were hoping that people would understand what this forum is for...

BIG engines, trans-brakes, volumetric efficiency, stroker cranks/rods/etc... HIGH-END DISCUSSION ONLY.

Now, I am not picking on anyone, but this forum is NOT for finding the best muffler shop in Oklahoma, what springs to use on a stock engine, why your "check engine" light is on, asking if you can beat a Corvette or ANYTHING like that. Again, HIGH-END DISCUSSION ONLY.

And the worst part about some posts is that some people KNOW that it doesn't belong here, and they even say that they know it doesn't belong here, but they post it here anyway. Where is the logic in that? If you know it belongs in LT1 tech or LS1 tech, then post it there because if you post it here, it WILL be moved anyway. That is what the moderators job is all about and you are just making it harder for them.

Speaking of which, everyone needs to drop the crying about "elitist attitude". That is just a clever way of whining because some questions just don't belong here. Sorry, but if your questions doesn't fit here, it's nothing personal. We created this forums SPECIFICALLY for ADVANCED questions. This is not just another tech forum to go to if you don't get an answer in another forum. If it was posted in another forum once, it certainly doesn't belong here. Say someone is building a 383 in their garage and they get stuck. The last thing they want to see is this forum full of posts about information they can't use.

You don't go to the 3rd Gen section asking tech questions about your LS1 do you? No, you don't. If you did, you will be told to go to the PROPER forum. This forum is no different in situation. It is never a question of a post being "good enough" to be here. It is a question of where it PROPERLY fits. If you really can't tell where a post goes, you probably should stay away from the garage.

So again, I am not picking on anyone, but please stop this "elitist" junk. You know what they say about if you can't run with the "big dogs"...

All this has been posted MANY times in the past.

If this forum isn't utilized the way it was intended and defined, this forum is not worth having. So, to all you "little dogs" out there, you will probably want this forum to be available for when you are "big dogs".

One last thing...Kudos to the moderators here. We didn't know their job would be this tough. They are trying their best. Remember, it is NOT personal if they move your post. Just don't go out of your way to make their job harder.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation

Damon,

My impression of the "Advanced" sections would be for "Advanced Topics", not "members".

I agree. People don't become advanced posters without being able to read advanced topics. An advanced section just needs an iron hand (or two) to move things back out if they don't belong, and explain why. People will get the idea after awhile.

Unfortunately, it's been proven that people don't read FAQs... look at all the signature violations and people trying to set up shop in the For Sale section. I agree about the quality standards, however. See above.

i would say since the f&thef came out, everyone had to own a third gen RX-7...when it came out i at the time had my T2...and was looking into getting an FD...but could in no way afford one..now i can afford one....so i read what other people have to say about certain new products...and search for anything technical that i don't know that would differ....but yes, many many knowledgable people have left this site....

Yes, NO SCREENING MEMBERS OR VOTING.

That is bad.

Just regulation of posts not appropriate to advanced.

LMAO.. Still amazes me that for one car which IMO is not any more special than any other car owned by a member(sorry if the new or previous owner are offended) needs BOTH a "Godzilla on its way to a new home :/" thread and a "And The NEW owner of GODZILLA is... " thread..

Again don't mean to offend anyone but really.. No one else sees this as a little obsessive?

Not only that we have a "Interested in the new project car?" thread. Which I can at least understand that one as it tells us that
GodzillaT78(the member, not the car) is building a another car as the new RXTuner.com "project car"...

I could go on forever but also it still amazes me how many exhaust pics/sounds/reviews and just general questions about exhausts threads we need...

Don't forget the thread about finding a nickname for his new project car...

He's just enjoying the attention while it lasts. I'll personally bring him back down to earth if it escalates further.
