been there. basically the best advise i got from the shop forman of another dealership.

true it sucks to pull the engine out again, and fix something thats not right, but other than that you've got nothing to loose. and hey maybe you did it right, ya know?

i agree, and tis more chacne than not that you got it right, because lets face it - building any engine isnt rocket science. If the parts really were than sensitive to tiny tolerances, they couldnt be mass produced in the way they are.

I currently have in my garage basically a whole core engine with no rotors. I actually plan to build it up with a mixture of old used seals, used bearings, and im going to personally score the bearings and generally do everything i can to to cause the motor problems. Then once its all built up, im going to slap a set of carbs on it and weld up a 2wd frame to run it with some kind of custom gearbox from a cheap POS RWD car. Should be good fun for parking lot racing and generally messing around, and who cares if it blows up - the plan is to do an excercise in building an engine WRONG and seeing what happens (leaving out seals etc)

Because im pretty convinced, as long as everything is clean (i.e your side seals arent grinding into the end plates because the grooves are full of crap) you cant really build one of these engines wrong...

I agree. Right now it's too late to turn back. I'm not going to pop it open now to see if everything is in the right spots. So, I've just got to drop it in and see if it runs. If it doesn't, then I'll have a good reason to crack it back open.

I wouldn't quite say that. I do agree that it can be fairly simple, but not all people are all detail oriented. Even then, you can "think" you are doing something right and in reality you are doing it wrong. Keep in mind, putting it together is not hard. Putting it together AND having it start/run is something else.

I hate to use Aeka GSR as an example, but his posts reminded me that sometimes it can be expensive to learn some lessons:

Thanks man. I was going to try and start it last week but I decided to finish buying evrything once and for all, so the 1st start up was delayed.


I'm hoping to make the next South Florida meet on the 25nd, so god willling I'll crank her up on the 18th "with Video"

That link you posted of GSR has me worried, but it's to late to turn back now. My irons where lappep also, but the guy who did them has been working on rotaries for years and does work for Carlos Lopez so I have faith.

your engine might run, but for how long? how much power?

Man i hope your engine fires up because I am thinking about rebuilding my own engine if/when it blows and if yours doesnt fire up then the chances of mine will be very low.

Me too! I don't think it will be a problem of whether it runs or not. More of "how well it runs" or "will it run well enough to actually move the car".

I'll be dropping it into the car this weekend, but I'll still have to wait to actually start it. I have one of the ReSpeed Oil Filter pedestals and it's getting upgraded at the moment. I hope to have it back in a week or so.

You sure you want to use that engine for the track? Looks like a show piece to me. Maybe it could serve double duty, looking good while going fast. Trust me, I know about looking good...

Thanks. They install should be fine barring any large spiders who have made a home under the car while it's been sitting.


I'm hoping I can spend as much time keeping it clean as I am getting it dirty.

I know it sounds stupid, but I always wanted to have a car where people would actually want to look under the hood. It's not a show car by any means, but hopefully it will be easy on the eyes.

I hear you...when I'm at AutoX events, I'll pop my hood after a run and walk away to watch other runs. The first event after I went single, etc...I turned aroound to walk back and there was a crowd of people around my car, and for an instant I thought something was wrong...fire or something??!?! freaked me out, until I just saw them pointing and conversing, LOL!!

even though modded Z06's hand me my ***, I still have fun...knowing I'm one of the only ones around who built, races, and drives home with an engine I put together BIG GRIN

Mahjik, have you test fit that race radiator yet? ive been looking at buying that for a while and on the website it says some minor modifications may be needed. i was wondering if its pretty much drop in.

I will have a little more information on that next week. I'll be checking that out after I drop the engine in the car. I anticipate having to drop the radiator down about .5 - 1".

I don't think it will be that bad keeping it clean from the track days. Here's a shot of my buddy RTS3GEN's car at the track:

also, Crispy has a shiny engine track car himself. I'll be running an oil pan baffle with an oil catch can to reduce and oil shooting around the engine bay.
