What is my 1993 OEM CYM RX-7/FD worth? (Fully built by IR Performance)
Hello everyone in the RX7Club.com community,
To start off…thank you for everyone's support and comments of my car over the past few years. That said, I don't know if this is a classified car ad or just gauging interest on the price. If I do sell it, I'm going to try to have it featured in some car magazines like Super Street, Modified and Import Tuner before hand. Anyhow, moderators, feel free to move or keep it here.
Anyhow, it's that time when I have to consider everything with some big changes coming up (moving to NYC and no where to drive it, new job, etc). In that retrospect, I have to now consider selling my FD within the next 2 months. It's a fully built FD from the guys at IR Performance, New Jersey back in 2008 - 2009. Below is a complete parts breakdown and details about the car. I'm a pretty picky and careful FD driver so she's definitely not ragged out or ever drifted, etc. So what I'm asking, how much is it worth in true value IN ADDITION TO what it's actually worth with the current state in the economy? And if there happens to be someone that chimes in interested in actually buying Her, let me know. We can arrange pickup or delivery. I just want her going to a good home and foremost, a responsible owner!
In addition, here is a link to my write-up ( https://www.rx7club.com/good-businesses-233/ir-performance-nj-feedback-motor-rebuild-service-quality-866787/ ) of the motor build quality after I picked up the FD from IR Performance, New Jersey back in Fall 2009. You can even contact them for reassurance you're getting a quality built FD. You can also contact Dale Clark whom has seen it a few times and checked it out. Aside from that, below is the complete parts and build information.

- "It's been one heck of a positive building experience for the car. Would I do it again? Definitely yes...in the color of an OEM Chaste White! Glad I had opportunity to build it correctly the first time around with a helpful support-base from the people/forum of www.rx7club.com and crew at IR Performance."
CAR DETAILS
- 1993 Mazda RX7 R1
- Original Competition Yellow Mica / CYM (Limited to only 350 models in USA. You can also sign up with www.Mazda.com for a membership to obtain this info to get details of this FD's authenticity of a CYM. Registration will request the VIN.)
CAR or VIN HISTORY
- Purchased as a stock FD in 2005 with 89,XXX miles on the chassis
- Today, the car has about 106,XXX miles on the chassis. The new motor from IR Performance started around 96,XXX. So that's about 10,000 miles ONLY on the new motor.
- The 3rd owner
- In Summer 2010, there was a minor bump on the back rear bumper but it was just a paint surface scratch at small ~1" big. Had it professionally inspected and checked out fine. Other than that, it's a clean title.
- Though an original CYM chassis but driver side door originally from a red FD and passenger side door originally a white door.
- Rear left wheel's lip has a dime-sized ding (...rock?). If it helps with the deal, I still have the original stock wheels (with ~80% tire life left) but powder coated in black I can swap out with.
- Rear license plate light bulb cover broke but can be glued on.
- The starter is starting to go out but always cranks over. Usually happens only on cold startups.
- Rear speakers aren't working. :P
- Though not required, I recommend using Idemitsu Rotary Premix (or equivalent) with each gas fill-up
- Though not required, I recommend using Royal Purple Synthetic Oil
- I have EVERY receipt, invoice, etc on ALL the parts on this car as well as work done to this car. Stuff like oil changes, spark plug changes, coolant changes, etc I did myself. 75% of the receipts, invoices, came from IR Performance. The other 25% is receipts from online parts vendors! I was pretty careful who to buy from or let work on my car.

First off, that's a great looking FD and it looks as though it's very well sorted. Your not going to have any trouble getting interest in the car, but your going to have trouble selling it in two months for a top market price in my opinion. I'm genuinely not sure what's it's worth, if I were you in this market I would be happy with $18.5 k given the mods, it's a CYM and its condition. It may take a lot longer than two months to get that price though.

Pretty amazing CYM but given the year and mileage, even though it has a lot of quality parts, would be in the neighborhood of 18-20 but you wont get that fast.
If you are in dire need of money, then 15 would be a quick sale but i wouldnt do it. I would just keep it then. That of course, you DONT need the money.
Thats just my opinion on what i see in the market today.

I'm with Qwik on this. First of all...beautiful car and I applaud you for the quality of parts and labor that went into building her.
That being said...I do find it hard to believe that someone would pay 18k-20k for the car...especially within a couple of months. It would have to be a magical "right" buyer.
Based on my experience over the last couple of years in watching FD prices...15k is probably the mark that it would go relatively quick at...but that also starts putting it within reach of less than responsible ownership imho. =)

I voted "no" for an obvious reason. However, we are all different and you may have other important obligations such as family.
I personally would not sell my FD to move to the cage known as NYC. In fact, you couldn't give me another FD to live there. But this is you, and your decision.
If you do not "need" the money and keeping it in storage up there is not too much of a burden, then why consider selling at all? Obviously the car isn't used for a DD now, so what would stop you from taking it out of storage every other weekend & enjoying it outside the city?
The things in life that we are passionate about create a lasting spark that enriches life itself.

^ What he said, NYC sucks
Nice car - stock bushings? Not sure why this forum loves Royal Purple so much, it consistently ranks among the worst performers among other synthetics in standardized tests.

Here is NYC is not easy to find a good garage to park your FD and its hard to keep it in good condition when the roads are horrible. plus people have no respect- One time i come out of my apartment and find two dudes sitting on my FD, I flipped and said "out of all the junk box cars in this block you ******* have to sit on mine". that's just an example of how hard is to keep an FD in the city. I also got side swiped over night and people bump into my bumpers when parking just to name a few.

FD FS ads always amaze me: typically ~95% of the ad text is about modifications, which have almost no influence on the value of the car. As with pretty much every car, chassis miles, year, and condition are all that matter.
With those high chassis miles, $15k seems reasonable if the condition is as good as it appears in the pictures.
However, you should be able to pull off some goodies (wheels, v-mount, PFC, turbos, etc.) and sell them for $5-$7k - and the car will still be worth $15k. IMHO, it really makes no sense to sell the car with the modifications because no one will pay you for them.

There is a point during modifying a car where you have to make the decision of if you want to keep the car or sell it later down the line. To be honest, simply putting all that money and effort you've already put into the car I would never think about selling unless absolutely need to. We own a piece of art and history.
Chassis miles are not as big of a deal if all the worn out rubber parts (bushings, etc) are upgraded/replaced and the transmission is rebuilt to handle the increased hp. The interior looks good in the pictures.

Done properly/professionally, modifications add value imo - the stock car is a ticking time bomb with many crap components. I would never buy another stock FD. The stock wheels and brakes are downright worthless, for example, and the stock suspension is not much better - then you add in the IC, turbos, ECU, on and on and on - it all belongs in a junkyard
