Strong Gas Smell.... then NO smell at all!

Ok, I did my search and I did find some interesting information, but I didn't quite find what I was looking for. Let me tell you my story.

This morning I was driving to work, and my car was running wonderfully(as it does every morning when the sun isn't beating down on it). Well, I am pulling up to the guard shack to show my I.D. to get on base, and as I slowly roll foward I get a strong, distinct wiff of fuel. It was a strong scary smell! I show my I.D. to the guard then pull off to park quickly. After I parked I sat in my car for a second to see if the smell would come back, but it didn't. I then left the car running and opened the hood to see if I could smell it there, but I didn't. It was obvious to me that it was coming from my FD when I initially smelled it.

I know there are threads on this topic, and they are very helpful, but they talk about this smell when the car is COLD. My car was easily up to normal opperating temp. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or possibly know what it is?

Thanks for the help!

I've smelled fuel sporadically, and the fumes seem to come from the fuel filler cap, even though it tests OK. It happens, apparently, when the fuel and vapor in the tank expand due to rapidly increasing temperature.

If you are taking turns real hard it will spill out of the overflow in the fuel neck ...

check your fuel lines from your hard lines to the soft lines to the fuel filter. I had a previous problem with another car. When the car warmed up, the rubber fuel line expanded and it leaked. There was a lingering smell and it would go away but come back when I drove the car.

Also check on the check-valve that goes from the brake booster to the UIM. This was a recall item and if you haven't had it done, the check valve might be cooked to the point of not working any more. Mine was.

C'mon guys.........that my friend is most likely your fuel pulsation dampner and possibly one of your fuel lines. Call Ray at Malloy, order a new FPD and there is a kit that replaces all of your fuel lines OEM for about $90.

Fuel Pulsation dampner most common source of fuel leak AND ENGINE BAY FIRES !! Don't mess around with this. I've changed mine along with about 3 others down here who were leaking pretty bad. One guy, Marc E. just had his car Burn down bec. of this. No ****, it just happened about 2 months ago.

I too had the same fuel smell.........intermittant........and just thought itwas coming from my gas cap. Well, indeed it was in the engine bay and could even see a slow drip onto the top of the engine block behind the UIM.

I agree that what you said needs to be checked out. That situation is dangerous!

However, my gas smell was definitely coming from my gas cap. I could smell it much stronger from the fuel-fill door area, especially when I opened it.

Its the FPD look at the top where the little black piece of plastic sticks up if you see wetness or a little puddle of fuel its time to replace!

Does the updated FPD (post recall) still fail frequently? It seems the only way it can fail dangerously is for the housing to crack?

The reason they fail is caused by its construction and where it is placed the housing is metal and the inner diaphram is made of rubber the rubber cracks and you have fuel flowing from the top where the diaphram is attached to the housing. If your non-sequential its very easy to find look directly under the UIM and towards the firewall its a little metal mushroom looking thing if your sequential and still heave the rats nest its harder to spot because of all the solenoids and lines in the way.
