AB Smoke? on startup

I know this has been covered a zillion times.... but not seeing something that matches exactly what I've got going on

1995 FD, Apexi Intakes, 3" turbo back to Apexi muffler, rich man non sequential mod, power FC. I have a working OMP but I put just a touch of premix in with the fuel just for safety. Car runs amazing, boosts great, pulls hard, no issues with hot starts.

When I start it dead cold after it sits for a day or so it smokes quite a bit, not enough to smoke the whole street out but enough that it lingers in the air for a while. It'll smoke until it gets right up to operating temp, or after 10-15 minutes of idling. Car is not burning any coolant, or excess oil and the smoke doesn't have a sweet or oily smell. Almost smells really fuel-y. Smoke is a greyish white color and not extremely thick, but still thick enough to hang in the air for a time.

Its important to note that once i start driving it, the smoke disappears within a minute or so and won't start again until it sits for a while.

Also, it didn't smoke much at all when I was on the stock ECU, once I switched over to the PFC this started. Im running on the basemap and WG pressure only on the turbos. So I'm almost just thinking its running overly rich until I drive it a little bit.

Thanks guys

You answered it. If it didn't smoke much on stock ecu then its fuel.
Premixing will cause the exhaust to smoke too but that wouldn't go away after 15 min. All cars run better once warmed up but sounds like you need to tune your cold start

Tune or leaky injector.

I don't know. I think it's pretty common to have white smoke on start up in a modded fd. It's probably one of the above.

Awesome thanks guys!

I assumed so I just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing anything... The smoke reminds me very much of when my 2JZ Aristo had a leaking injector. Ill be replacing them over the winter anyhow so no real big deal there...

Ill be installing my AF gauge this week so ill have a better idea of how richy rich it is.

Im thinking could be a water temp correction thing too, may just be a bit too rich, but a gain the AF gauge will help with that.

Do be on the safe side, you should clean the injectors before getting a tune.

Even with new injectors? Ill be cleaning the primaries and re-using them, but getting brand new (larger) secondaries.

What are everyones water temp correction settings?

THinking that could be a big part of the problem.

I surprised to see that this is an "issue". I have an OMP delete and am running 1oz per gallon. My car can be used to clear neighborhoods of mosquitos when I start it. Even once it is warmed up, I still smoke a bit.

Oh I know what you mean. I just figured it was normal for a premix car, but some posts above seem to suggest that it can be tuned out of it. I am all ears on these suggestions, but skeptical of it ever going away.

I see you're from Canada and when I lived in Wisconsin which is also a cold climate, I used to get that if the temp was below 50 degrees. My car would also idle a bit rough and not that I wanted it to but the aws wouldn't work either. If it was above 60 I never had these problems, nor is a problem now that I'm living in Arizona. I posted a thread and no one really had any answers. Not sure if it was a sensor or what but the car runs fine.

How old is your engine, and how many miles are on it?

Unknown milage. i bought it from an auction in Japan and they stated it had been rebuilt. Just not when... so its hard to know.

The compression is totally fine and its not consuming any coolant or excess oil.

I just came across this old thread and noticed that there was never a resolution posted.

I had the exact same problem with my '95 (completely stock engine).

After sitting at 45 F or so over night, it would start fine but would idle rough and smoke profusely (dense white, like a James Bond style smoke screen) for 2-3 minutes until it warmed up. After warming up, there would be no significant smoke for the rest of the day. It would also sometimes knock on hard acceleration in 3rd gear. Maddeningly hard to duplicate for my mechanic as the problem would only happen at most once per day after sitting overnight in cold temperatures (i.e. not inside the warm garage). There were no codes thrown. Changed plugs, cleaned the injectors, and experimented with octane boost (to ~ 95 octane), to no avail.

Both problems disappeared after the water temperature sending unit (NF02-18-840) was replaced. Apparently, the incorrect temperature signal was confusing the (stock) ECU.
