Rewiring ENTIRE Engine Harness

I am thinking about doing this, has anyone else tackled this?

When you convert to a single you are left with dozens of empty connectors. One answer would be to just cut them off. That still leaves you with the problem of brittle wires. I figure it would be easy to run new wire and wrap the wire and probably route the wires a little better seeing you have alot more room.

There wouldn't be many sensors either, some that I can think of are:

Crank Angle Sensors x 2
Injectors x 4
Coils x 3
Air Temp
TPS
ICS
Water Temp x 2
Water Level Sensor
MOP

What else is there really? Would I be able to run wires directly from the sensors to the appropriate pins on the ECU?

Or are the sensors intertwined with common grounds between certain sensors and **** like that?

Been there, done that.

Coil harness connects to the main harness(goes to the starter and the battery/main relays.

The ECU only uses 2 yellow connectors. The engine harness goes to these 2 connectors.

I understand that part, thats pretty common knowledge....

Any insight on doing this?

electrical tape wires temporarily together to for it how you want them to run and good luck!

It's not really that hard...just time consuming.

oh crap...you still have MOP. That's the bulk of the engine harness, along with the stock solenoid crap. Once you get rid of those two parts, the harness is SO SMALL ... lol

I did it. I completely stripped the harness down to the wires. The individual wires were in good shape; it was all the crap it was wrapped in that was dead. I removed all of the unused wires.. completely pulled them from the plugs. I then put the harness over the motor (To measure) and re-wrapped everything with some fireproof rubber electrical tape.

Bring it over dude.. I'll help if you like.

Also a tip when your pulling the wires out of the ECU plugs, if you flip up this little retainer on top it will make things a millions time easier.

You're planning on doing this with the harness in the car

I have done it, took me over 5 hours, 7 rolls of electrical tape and tons of different sized black loom. It was actually for one of the other owners here at the shop. When it came time to rebuild mine, I just went ahead and bought a new harness......mine was so crispy it was unrecoverable

I would need connectors for Mazda stock parts...

If you're going to rewire things, I would replace some of the Mazda connectors with something more modern. The factory connectors are pretty clunky. Check aircraft supply stores, they are good resources for stuff like that. I'm talking about the connectors that have wires coming off both ends, like the one at the air pump for instance.

You should also look into using heat shrink rather than electrical tape or split loom, it's a much nicer solution; it takes up less space, and offers much better protection against heat & moisture. The downside is that it takes longer to do (more attention to detail is needed), and you'll need a heat gun also.

http://cableorganizer.com/heat-shrink/ check halfway down the page for the "High Temperature (Fluoropolymer) Heat Shrink Tubing" , that should be more than enough heat protection for your wires.

Its funny to see this thread now, as I'm presently re-wiring for use with the AEM EMS on my 20B. It's fairly straight foward, I just do one type of thing at a type, for example, injectors, and then trace it back from the ECU pin, snip the wire after about a foot, cut an appropriate length of new wire, solder it in, solder the clip on the other end, and I'm done! So far I'm about half of the way done and after another two episodes of the Sopranos I should be finished.

Yeah.. Save time and money.. Get a haltech with a flying lead harness. This will update the connectors to weather pack which are really nice.
