Post-Transmission Swap Questions

Hey, hoping someone who has done an automatic to manual conversion before can help me out.

I had the conversion done, but I'm having a few problems now.

1. The speedometer doesn't work. I assume a wire just needs hooking back up, correct?

2. Every time I get on it hard, for example in 5th around 3200 rpms and stomp on it to pass someone or just go faster the check engine light comes on. It's also happened in 4th again around 3200rpms when I stomped on it. Do you think this is an electrical problem (the computer was swapped to manual) or something else possibly more serious? The engine light goes off after the car is restarted. Of course the Hold light blinks constantly and the Air Bag light comes on only sometimes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Erica

sounds like an ECU problem. Swap yours out for a 5spd one and see if the problem continues.

edit---didnt read that youve already did that

I have a manual and that rarely happens to me (the check engine light). Im not sure what it is. Maybe an old selenoid you budged or moved to much while doing the swap (btw congratulations on the swap). Also do you get the code while revving it in neutral? If you do you could always try to read it and see what it is.

you said the hold light blinks, so im guessing you still have the auto gauge cluster? if you still have the auto cluster, you'll need to get a 5speed 1. if you changed the gears, the auto speedo will be off, and that could also be causing other problems. oh and dont forget, your redline is now 8k instead of 7k. have fun!

Erica,

I converted my auto over to a 5 speed and did the wiring myself. Got it right the first time. I used a 5 speed motor and the 5 speed wiring harness for the engine. I left the dash the same and just changed the flange and kept the 3.9 gears for simplicity. Did you use the auto harness coming into the car from the engine? Did you do the electrical conversions or a shop??

The speedo signal goes through different wires in the auto harness versus the manual harness.

Do you have a wiring schematics?

Here is my original post and what is described there works.

Email me direct for any further questions or if you want to discuss the electrical schematics or troubleshooting.

Good Luck,

You do not need to swap G clusters. Did you also swap the engine harness? If you swapped to a manual harness you must rewire the blue clip coming in. Use Tim's diagrams, they work, tested by Tim and myself. Also make sure you plugged the speedo and other wires to the actual tranny.

Remove and unplug the auto ECU behind the main ECU to stop the hold light blinking.
