WA 1980 RX7 Speedo

Ok, I've got what is probably the typical problem for a 1980 Model where the speedometer stops functioning. So here are my questions:

I'm in the process of removing the dash and I've got all of the fasteners I can see from the front removed, Where else is the instrument cluster attached to?

Once the cluster is out, what do I look for in determining why the speedo is not working?

Can I Swap the speedo or the instrument cluster for a later version, say 84 or 85?

Thanks!

welcome to the board.

do you have a copy of the FSM? if not, you should get one. Foxed.ca.

you're basically going to look for where the cable attached to the back of the cluster and see if it's attached, not attached, broken, etc. have you already checked the end attached to the tranny?

from what i understand, the Gen II cable is your likely available option. the SA/FB cable is NLA from Mazda.

i don't think the instrument cluster from the S3 cars is going to fit your car. let me rephrase ... you can probably make it work if you really want to, so i don't think it will swap and still look alright without swapping the dash with it.

When we had that problem, it was a broken speedo cable. Replaced with one out of a totaled 1st gen, all good.
