oil pressure spiking

so I think I did a stupid thing.

I was curious why my oil pressure was spiking to 140 psi at just 3000rpm rev.

I now remembered that I blocked off oil passage into the front cover by completely blocking off the hole from the front iron to front housing.. I'm not using the oil metering pump, so I figured this was a good way to circumvent any possible leak between the front iron and front housing oil hole...

now I'm having spiking oil pressures and I think it's because I blocked oil passage to the front oil pressure regulator because the front oil pressure regulator is on the front alum housing?

I will tear down the motor again if I must, but I just wanted to ask whether this would be necessary? do I absolutely need to get oil to the front oil pressure regulator when I'm 100% premixing? can too high of oil pressure harm my engine?

thank you.

Can you find a picture of the passage that you blocked?

cool, thanks.

actually I see that regulator has a separate inlet..

the black arrow is where I tapped a thread and plugged it with a set screw.

now I'm back on where I started? why is my oil pressure spiking so high...?

Did you upgrade anything, oil coolers, lines, thermostat, pedestal?

After removing the stock oil cooler and moving up to free flowing 10an lines w/ out a thermostat, the oil pressure seems to be a good deal higher on lighter weight oil. I can't recall exactly, but I do see around 110+psi on start-up if rev' around 2-3k rpm

that's comforting to know. I just changed oil to amsoil 20/50 from my normal mobil 10/50. I just wanted to make sure that there is nothing causing obstruction beyond the sensor that may cause the pressure to spike. would you mind doing a short clip of your pressure as you're idling and rev'ing at idle at your convenience?

During the rebuild did you by chance remove the stock thermowax pellet and replace it with a plug?

are you talking about the thing that goes at the end of the oem e-shaft? I got aftermarket e-shaft and it just came with an allen plug at the end. That's always been that way..

Talking about on of these.... 86-11 Rx7 & Rx8 Atkins' Thermal Pellet (ARE50)
In my experience it will raise indicated oil pressure, at least at cold start.

There is not a thermal pellet on a 20B.

Your oil pressure is normal.

If u dont have omp then block the cover hole or u can leave it open and leave the omp shaft in with a spacer

My car idles at about 1300ish and pressure is 55psi maxive ever seen is about 100psi on my car i use 10/40 oil

You diddnt do the oil pressure valve mod did you where you press the end of it in squashingthe spring inside ?

I just wanted to clarify, before i order a catch can, Is it ok running both nipples from the oil fill neck to the catch can as long as its vented and has a filter, or is there somewhere else it needs to go? car is single turbo, so i obviously don't have the stock twin return lines.

Some track guys route the oil after the catch can to the rear oil return from the stock twins.
