What happened when they first became legal to import was a influx of RHD FD's and then just like the hype train came, it pretty much went.

Hell I RARELY see a FD where I live, let alone a RHD FD at that.

So the same thing will probably happen to you guys in the USA. They will get imported and the average joe who doesn't know about rotaries but seen Fast and the furious will purchase it and beat on it and blow the engine and then will sell it. Phase over.

I think I posted earlier but a local rotary guy here has his shop lined up with about 5 RHD cars which are all in OK condition to absolute trash
Hey Rocket,

So what are the laws/restrictions in Canada in regards to importing? Meaning how old do the cars have to be, what models, ect.

I don't have experience with purchasing cars out of the country, but wouldn't it be easy to go pick one up? 20 hour drive from Socal to Vancouver.

One Canada dollar is .77 cents in the US. There is a ton of good deals in Canada and with the conversion rate, you can basically pick up a decent FD for around 10k dollars.
I considered buying a couple of different GT3s from Canada because of the dollar diff and it seems fairly easy but still a PIA versus buying one in the states.

For the p car you must get a letter from Porsche stating the car meets US standards.

You also have to pay duty and possibly broker fees so call that about 4%. Not big money on an FD but can be cost prohibitive on a GT3.

Oh and I'm in VA so shipping would likely be 1000 to 1500 or so.

There is currently a nice CYM listed here on the forum that's from Canada and it's not cheap. I think he's asking 19,500 and it's heavily modded with about 80k miles.

Say you work a deal for 17 or 18. After duty and shipping you are likely at 19 or 20k for a car you can't drive or look at which is a fairly big risk when buying an FD.

Here are some cars listed in Canada. Don't see any smoking deals for parts cars or otherwise

I'm not sure the argument that there are only going to be leftovers/crappy beat up RHD FD's to buy is valid.. (*yes, also just playing devil's advocate, I think values overall will be taking off soon/now for USDM creampuffs). -but it's not like a vehicle importer can't find JDM cream puffs to import just as easily... Anything for sale, they can get.

Btw Fritz, Rivsu is in Florida which is not too far away from you.

Correct. Who knows what happened to all these cars that were imported years ago. Plus making a left turn, I couldn't do it.

I'm with Fritz there are a lot of fees and extra work to deter plenty of people from importing an FD or any car for that matter.

If you're interested on JDM import cars this site is fun to look at but even by browsing the site you can see that actual importation isn't that high. Everyone says ya I want a JDM car until they find out the details of what they have to do to get one.

93 vs 93, I'm sure they have just as many cream puffs as we have here. Importer also flip whatever they can, they aren't gonna go out of their way to find these so call cream puffs just to make a few extra bucks. Yea some good deal might come across the pond, but I think it'll be as rare as finding a good deal here.

Within 12 months someone will sell a stock FD for $40,000 or more.
Is that crystal call for rent? Would you bet on that sale?

LOL

I don't see a private sale FD selling for 40k (possibly a dealer if he gets the right car) in the next year. Not even the CW base FD with 10k miles or whatever it has at this time would sell for 40k. Give it 5 years though and most all the low mileage FDs will be selling for 40 plus.

Still too many low mileage cars out there. You can pretty much buy whatever low mileage car you want for 30k today except the low mileage CW base. I'm still trying to buy that one LOL. The paint on this car sucks and a 10k paint job goes a long way if you are not happy with the color Another 1k or so removes the sunroof etc..etc..

Gordon has definitely earned his crystal ball though and is probably spot on with the interest thing. We will see some crazy **** in the next 20 years so buckle up.

In Canada, we've been importing Jspec cars for a while because of the 15 yr rule .... we are now importing 99/00 spec cars ....

Some will get out to the market and they go for around 10k CDN ... LHD cars sell for at least 12k if it's running regardless of mileage.

Most of the importers know selling them in parts will make them more money (running a chop shop is cheap), so they bring it over or buy up whatever is in the market and chop them. I know of 3 shops and numerous individuals that do this.
Once chop, they sell to the US

So if you are waiting for some cream puffs, good luck and may the force be with you.

Otherwise, you guys in the US are getting parts already.
