22 now, owned the FD for almost 7 years now. Took 3 to get it running however

 

This is an old thread and I am an old FD owner- 66 in December. Infectious disease consultant for the CDC and NIH. Bought my first RX-7 new in 1986, another in 1987, another in 1990 and finally the only one I still have, a '93 in 2001. Bought it used with 55k on the odometer and a sick engine for $15K cash. Have put two replacement engines and a pile of other stuff in it for over $70K.

Gordon- Glad you are holding down the fort in Reigelsville. My family settled in the Plainfield Township area back in the 1700s and I used to live near Broadheadsville where I tore up the roads with my GTUs. Now I am down south where you can drive a RX-7 all year round.

im 21. new york city ironworker and forex (currency exchange) trader. i have been building my fd for 2 years. bought it as a project car for road racing/time attack. currently have koyo rad, greddy 3 row 32R intercooler, custom exhaust manifold with dual 38mm tials, rebuilt and bridgeported my motor, borge warner 67mm turbo, i.d injectors, tial 50mm bov, exedy twin disc clutch, dual walbro pumps, gram light 57dr wheels, dual mocal oil coolers, pulley set, full custom exhaust (4" dp - 3.5 all the way thru) into apexi dual n1 mufflers, hks twin power (for now..) brembo bbk, brembo rotors and pads in rear, milspec wiring harness, 4 barrell throttle body, 4 barrell intake manifold, top hat for intake manifold, bc coilovers, new control arms, all new barings, ad048 tires ... alot of stuff im missing just cant think of right now.. currently painting engine bay and getting ready for reassembly.. then gunna start the cage and bodywork.. have a full feed kit, carbon hatch, carbon vis hood scoot style, everything else ready for interior including defi gauges, momo steering wheel, bride seats, .. its endless.

 

I'm 21, living in Miami, FL. I am an International Relations major at Florida International University. I'm the marketing manager at ISS Forged manufacturing, and I run the Trinidad & Tobago branch of the family business. And in the past year i've spent way more than i'd like to admit on building the FD

 

35, Dallas area, on my 3rd FC
1st was a very pretty stock (other than springs/shocks/sways) '87GXL

Next came a 1987 T2, monster turbo motor by BDC, too much to have fun with on the street. It is with it's current owner, 74yr old dude who takes it to the Texas Mile and various autoX and track days

Current is my precious 90 GTUs. It is super pretty, very clean. Some autoX and such. Stupidly ran the stock plastic thermostat neck at a track day 110F outside. Pop goes the neck and melt goes the rings. Fresh rebuild by K Landers is sitting on the garage floor waiting to go back in.

I'd love to have an FD some day but already have a wife.

Acroy- I guess you know the 90 GTUs you have is one of the rarest RX-7 made- only 100 made to comply with the homologation rules to compete in IMSA. I bought mine new not knowing this until John Matras came to my house to photograph it for his book on the history of the RX-7. He wanted a photo of every model of every production year. He called someone he knew at Mazda corporate office and found out the production numbers. Mine is now at its second owner up in NH doing auto X and other racing functions for which it is well suited.

I am a 25yr old female office assistant

Bought my first rotary (FD) in June 2009, i believe so I was 21, ran but needed body work

Original engine blow a coolant seal at 121k so replaced that w/ a street ported single which just recently lost compression with only 15k... now going ls

Still love the rotary and hopefully will own another when I make more cash

All in all I have spent over 10k in maint/mod not including car.

 

Yep I sure do Excellent story about yours. I suspect at least half of them went to owners who had no idea what they were. Mine did:

1st owner was (kid you not) little old retired lady in Florida who thought is was pretty on the dealer lot and paid the $25k sticker price (like $44k today?). I have the original window sticker.

2nd owner was a fellow forum member. He bought it from little old lady in 2003 IIRC, to find out she never revved it much and engine was full of carbon. He had it rebuilt by K Landers. He did Sparco seats, full suspension work, etc etc. But left the dam plastic t-stat neck. He auto-x'ed it routinely till an expensive divorce forced him to sell.

I bought in 2008 and have logged several auto-x and track days, breaking the DAM PLASTIC TSTAT NECK on a 110f day and cooking the motor. K Landers gets more business. As part of the process I am converting to manual steering and removing AC. Keeping all the parts in case I (or next owner) wants to return it to stock garage queen.

Love this thing. I will hate to sell it when the time comes to get a FD or Z06.

 

too bad... Did it loose compression on rear rotor?
Don't give up on doritos on a stick. Mild rebuild, HEAT MANAGEMENT including shields and wraps help a lot!! best of luck

 

Yes below 30 on rear and 70 on front. Had turbo blanket and exhaust wrap in works but until then I had an egt gauge so I could watch temps

 

17 had my fd for 2 years work at food basics grocery department. Managed to buy my favorite car and I've spent about 2 grand

I'm 25. Got my first 7, an 86 fc at 16, sold it at 18. Off to college, got a job, bought a house, recently engaged, and finally in the stage of looking for an FD. But had already spent 4k on parts the last few months. Yes, I know I may be crazy for buying parts for a car I don't have yet but it'll definitely drive me crazy waiting on parts when the FD is sitting in the garage a few months from now with nothing but an itch I can't scratch.

 

i'm 27. had the idea of getting a toy to turn into a nice street/track car after i got my **** together. nearly 2 years ago i had my home built and then this year i got married in april. while searching craigslist i found an FD for a decent deal. definitely a project. at the same time i had a set of advans for sale and while meeting the owner i found out that we were about the same age and he had 2 r32 skylines. he had just traded his r33 for the 2 r32's. that gave me the inspiration to pull the trigger on the rx7. i figured i could always take my time on the car so this year, on my birthday, i bought the rx7. i keep saying it's a project and it's gonna take time but yet everyday i'm on here or other sites getting info and buying little things here and there for an LSx conversion.

 

I'm 22, got my FD at 16. Wasn't running properly and a lot of wiring work. Compiled a lot of information from Rx7-club and got it running. Pulled it apart again for full rebuild, then pulled it apart for new turbo and cooling. Now, ripping out the interior, renewing it (I have tan carpet, going black), and doing wiretuck. I also have a full FEED kit waiting to be installed and painted.

 

I just turned 54 and I was 39 when I got the car! Sad, but I think time moves faster than the FD!

 

27. Forgot when I got the FD. Aircraft is the game.
