BNR discontinued the Stage 3, introduced an alternative

I just randomly visited BNR’s website and noticed that they no longer offer their hallmark BNR Stage 3 twins for the FD.

“The Stage 2’s have replaced the older stage 3 design! Out with the old and in with the new! The older stage 3’s were labor intensive so I decided to develope an HT12 replacement that will have many advantages over the Garrett GT28’s, without all the man hours! BNR has hit a few markets and had to redesign the units or discontinue them all together.”

So it seems they offer three upgrade options:

1. “Stage 1” (CHRA’s only) for $1100

2. “Stage 1” drop in turbos for $1750

3. “Stage 2” (larger compressor wheel) drop in turbos for $2100

What do you guys think? $1100 for new CHRA’s with 360 degree thrust bearings, BNR’s drop in Billet compressor wheel upgrade, no need to modify the compressor housings and y-pipe, and no core fee?

I think its a better option and should be more responsive.

It's awesome that people continue to develop parts for these cars!

As much as I love the twins and would love an upgrade, I can't modify the turbos in street prepared auto-x class.

92-2002 Mazda RX7 Stage 2 HT12 Turbocharger Upgrades

The Stage 2’s have replaced the older stage 3 design! Out with the old and in with the new! The older stage 3’s were labor intensive so I decided to develope an HT12 replacement that will have many advantages over the Garrett GT28’s, without all the man hours! BNR has hit a few markets and had to redesign the units or discontinue them all together. The great thing about the HT12 parts is they are much smaller versus the Garrett GT28 parts. Thinner shafts, smaller thrus collars, which makes a pretty big difference with response! That being said you will see even better response with the both turbochargers which makes the sequentials that much more responsive!

We do require a core set of twins on build up! [Core Document]

Here is what you get with the new Stage 2 HT12’s!
  • GT28 Casting turbine wheel (better than hitachi aero)
  • Left hand shaft nut (no more disappearing nuts lol)
  • high performance 360 degree, dynamic thrust assembly(dual feed)
  • Dynamic, billet seal plate (less drag than stock carbon seal setup)
  • BNR’s Billet compressor wheel upgrade (20% more volume over stock)
  • Dynamically balanced less than .5 gram/in2 as a rotating assembly
  • O ring grooved bearing housing (eliminate the silicone mess that’s normal)
  • Ported wastegate (30mm)
  • Radius put on the secondary turbine inlet (cuts down on cracking)
  • Upgraded Actuator assemblies (3 additional psi over stock. This helps stock boost control solenoids run less duty cycle and generate more boost! No need for aftermarket solenoids or aftermarket boost controller!)

Anyone put them through their paces yet? I wonder what kind of power these can make.

I imagine power-wise they will be really similar to the old BNR's, probably low 400's to the wheel. Response should be improved which is always nice. Might make some more power under the curve and more power at certain boost levels but I think max power will probably be similar. Time will tell though.

Should be able to make as much as stock twins and those have made 411rwhp with the 10 sec 1/4 mile times and trap speeds to back up the dyno #s.

Will they be able to make 475rwhp like balljoint's external wastegar bnr stage 3s?

We dont know yet, but most likely since the compressor maps support 475twhp rotary if the truly flow 20% over stock.

Honestly, the smaller compressors probably are better all the way around when stuck with stock exhaust housings exhaust wheel exit merge into downpipe.

Dumb question, but could a smaller efr CHRA be grafted into the housings along with larger compressor covers?

Another dumb question from me: Would the same exhaust flow (limited by manifold) be able to create more power with different CHRAs? I think it wont.

My reasons for doubting is because the exhaust flow have a set amount of energy it can deliver on to the exhaust side (limited by manifold flow). Since the exhaust force have a set max, this would indicate that the air flow also have a set max. And the only way to change this is on how effective the turbine designs are. Given that the main idea with EFR is (if i have understood it correct) the super light rotating assembly and thus faster spool. And then again EFR CHRA would further increase the spool on twins but not max HP.

I guess I should be glad I bought the stage 3 set earlier this year while they were still available?

There's something to be said for longevity here. The Garrett GT25 turbo in my protege has 180k miles on it and works perfectly, and I expect the same from the Garrett gt28 CHRAs in the stage 3s. Maybe the HT12s hold up too, but I'm happy to have Garretts

The EFR turbos have a long CHRA because of the dual ball bearings and dual shaft seals, so it would be a bunch of work to make those fit as hybrids- but anything can be done.

My personal opinion is something in the exhaust side is limiting stock hybrid twins power as the only person to make significantly more power did so with the addition of an external wastegate to get more exhaust flow. I dont know if the restriction is the turbo exhaust housings themselves or the dead head merge out of the two exhaust wheels into the downpipe..
It would be possible to cast, machine or fabricate a new piece for between the two turbos that had better combined flow and fit in the same space.

I think it's a great cost-effective alternative to 99 spec turbos or even his past stage 3 turbos. Also easier for the install if you don't need a custom y-pipe and could use an efini y-pipe.

I really want to know where he's getting those brand new turbine housings he's selling! Noticed he won't separate them from his turbo sales though damnit.

I bet you those are the housings from the SP Hitachi turbos that I have. These are the ones that Hitachi began making in 2014 as a much better alternative to the '99 spec.. They have from Hitachi a 360 degree thrust bearing, a 40% larger shaft for safer higher boost and a stock 27mm wastegate that he probably enlarges to 30mm. The Hitachi's come with a 12% larger billet compressor wheel and he probably changes the wheel to his billet wheel.

BNR's are a great upgrade period. They will make more power than the 280hp later turbos. They may not be as responsive, but these new ones are so new it's hard to say how they will perform just now. But they will be a lot more responsive than a single turbo in general.

I plan on eventually picking up those BNR's actually here soon. I'm very curious myself as my goal was to break 400-420RWHP with AI and pump. I know the stage 3's can and the site claims 450-475. I'll see what I get out of them with stock motor and then probably end up getting a port to go for 400 if I can't pull it off/pop it in the process. I've got most the supporting mods(injectors/rails is the last biggie).

Sadly this is also pending Corona letting me get back into Japan to ship my car here... Wife's babysitting it over there atm.

Anyone have their hands on the new stage 2 BNR's I'm really curious about what the dynographs might look like compared to the old Stage 3's hopefully similar(or better?! faster spool????)

Update this thread when you do get them. I’m sure a lot of us would like to have results from the new models. Myself included. I plan to buy upgraded twins for mine when I get back, but that’s four years down the road.

Waiting to get my turbos back from BNR right now. I dropped them off back at the end of Feb for the stage 2 upgrade, was supposed to pick them up a few weeks back but I guess COVID has things running behind.

Anyone already ask Bryan if with the new stage 2 that you have to send your Efini Y pipe in to be extended like the old stage 3s?

No modification to the Ypipe is needed with the new version.

Fun time to be looking at upgrades after being out of the game for a bit. I was leaning toward the 8374, then the SP twins and now these stage 2s from Bryan. I like the ideas of these more so than the SPs and Bryan’s a stand up guy....helped out way back when Shane Racing ripped me of on a set of “new” 99 twins. I’d rather get these and compare them to my 99 set up as 400 to the wheels would be plenty for my car...for a while at least. Luckily I logged my last run when I made 363 so I can try to keep the boost levels constant between the runs. Sounds like I might be i for a wait though but gives me time to get my speedhut gauges and sakebomb headlights installed, plus a few other things.

I've called him a few times. Spoke to him early last week, said he was going to work on them later last week and that he'd call me when they were done. I'm not in a rush yet so I'm letting him take his time. Engine is out for a rebuild at the moment and should be done this weekend, if I haven't heard back by then I'll be calling and pressing the issue. If it's a legitimate issue of supplies/COVID stuff that's no problem, but it looks like he's turning out plenty of Ecoboost turbos right now on his FB page.
