How to value your FD
Depending on the greater market. I think you'll realize you got a good deal next year. It's at the high end of the market, but so is the car. There just aren't that many r2's floating around, and they're only original once. Do yourself a favor and protect your investment by going crazy on inspection, maintenance, refurb. It's a really original, really hot, turbo, 25 year old car.
So, Hagerty now ranks the FD and Supra as being tied for the hottest cars in America at 97 each. That's based on the average appreciation in the sales they see and they have an enormous base of transactions.

I agree with most of what you say but the top selling US spec FD will ever sell for more than the top selling US Spec Supra.
Currently I believe the market on FDs and Supras have plateaued. A lot of high asking prices but most cars that are moving are between $15-25K.
It is interesting who is buying the cars at current levels. The survey of length of ownership is very interesting - in that there seems to be an even split across the five categories. This I would take as healthy for the market as it shows some diversity and continuing demand from new, or repeat, owners.
The context of the thread and title are way off from where they started. Very average cars are asking +$20k, and that's not what we were talking about. We were talking about #2's parading as #1's.

However that said lets give it 20 years. I could care less about a supra. Lots of cars I'd rather own but when it comes to the FD there is just something extra special about it that I think will remain intact for the next few decades.
And here we have another FD up for sale on BAT. Barely an average example. An accident. Paint issues. Driver's seat cracking. Not a nice car despite its relatively low 51,000 miles or so. Wonder if it will top $15,000?

I bet it goes near or above $20k. Look at all the gushing comments. Superlatives everywhere.
It's funny how the cars that need the work done go for higher value than the ones that have already had it done. No one wants a car anyone has touched. The same goes for that GSL-SE that sold for over $10k in BaT last week. I took one look underneath and saw it needed bushings, shocks, springs, and likely other stuff as well. The paint was horrid. You can pick up a car with all that sorted for a few grand less.

Yep looks like a barn find variety (dirty engine bay, faded paint, faded cowel, faded cluster rings, missing fender brake vent grills, hole in dash console, faded ast, low brake fluid etc...etc...) so I also suspect around 15k or so.
PS the avg FD is currently some POS sitting on jack stands so this one is not too shabby LOL

I don't know how many active members this forum has but it likely has thousands of inactive members so I'm betting the majority of FD owners are on this forum or were on it in the past/know about the forum. I'm also guessing/hoping that there are still quite a few FD owners who've had this car a long time and it's just sitting in their garage or storage somewhere waiting for someone to drive it

Count me in the inactive members, until recently. I haven't had the time, money, or ambition to get the car out and deal with getting it emission tested and re-registered, so it's been sitting for most of the last 10 years. Now that it's hit the 25 year mark and WADoT doesn't want to put a probe up my tailpipe, I'm bringing it back out of hibernation.
This is a car meant to be driven!!!

I've been in and out of the rabbit hole more times than I can count and now firmly believe the rabbit hole is for track cars only.....LOL

The FD is the perfect street sports car (2800 pounds, 300 rwhp) with just the basic bolt ons and if you add cooling mods it may even survive a track weekend.
That said the mod thing is a drug so typically you first have to figure out how high you can get before OD'ing and then real it back in. Some folks have a very high tolerance LOL.
BOTTOMLINE: YMMV!!!!
