I believe that Mazda ran the twin turbo on some late FC and perhaps the Eunos Cosmo. So if we are speculating on their motives: Perhaps they found that the failure rate below 100 psi went up substantially with the twin turbo set-up. Or some other testing showed that. So they went with the 100 psi to cover themselves, indeed.
But ironically they forgot to change to USDM FSM and ended up getting the failure rates they were trying to avoid.
@Akagi'sWhiteComet Akagi do you know what the compression lower limit was in the FSM for the Eunos Cosmo?
Perhaps by the time the FD started to get into the hands of the street racers, many of the engines were indeed on their last legs, and could not withstand the harder driving.
Do you guys think sellers are smart to unload or making a mistake? I think 2023 will be the best year for selling these cars in the near term or over the next 5 years or so. Also, it's a great time to cash in and buy high interest rate bonds etc....
Yea it appears no effort was made to clean-up the engine bay and the underside.
With only 3,800 miles the dust & dirt just might be "all original" and a detail cleaning might afford an easy return to near showroom condition
Hard to believe there is still an FD with only 3,800 miles....so rare, may be the only one?
What does the uindercarraige tell you of the history of storage condiitions?
Car seemed to have been MIA for 18 years.
Engine bay does not give the feeling of "mintness" you'd might want for such a low mileage car.
It sold for 47k on BAT in 11/12/2018 and was much cleaner at that time. The current owner probably let it sit in a less than ideal garage and only drove it 1k miles. Great investment, he should make 80 to 90k or more given this crazy market!
Rich, list your FD with 1k miles and be the current leader. Then take your 175k and buy some bonds. OR, not, keep it for 20 years and sell for 500k That said your 175 over 20 years at only 4% would be 389k.

I think prices are going to go way up in the next five years. The 80s/90s collector car market is still just entering its stride and blue chip cars like the FD are going to get a lot more attention. All it takes is a little bit of the traditional Euro collector market to take note and demand is going to far exceed supply - collectible examples of all the 90s Japanese halo cars are extremely rare in 2023. To take an extreme example, there are less good FDs left than there are Ferrari F40s.
The Golden Age 90s Japanese halo cars and the FD in particular are cultural icons, rare, beautiful to look at, and represent a period of design and lightweighting that is no longer possible today. All of these bode very well for future appreciation, IMO.

I agree that they are great cars I just think the last 20 years of wealth creation caused by governments/central bank funding is getting closer to a breaking point.
The value of the FD in the last 5 years has tripled along with the 996 GT3 etc..... Maybe in 5 years FDs will be selling for 450k. It will be interesting to see what this crazy world does next.
Most homes have doubled the last 10 years etc....
Will it continue, probably, I'm just being optimistic and hoping central banks/governments get their act together.
The last two BAT trades might have been influenced by some market softening (for FD).
The current three cars are interesting as they will likely attract three different types of buyers.
Even so, a sample set of five may be too little to draw any conclusions.
It seems the economy is rocking on despite the perceived headwinds.
Remember to breathe!
Yep, as long as we have war, inflation cough cough reduction acts etc.... our assets are in spectacular shape but if you don't have assets, your purchasing power is being obliterated which isn't good for anyone in the long run.
450k FDs.. idk. There's a ton of interesting stuff out there for a half mil. You really gonna choose an FD over a TT V12 Lambo? Over a pair of AMG SLS?

I'm pretty sure these things will always exist. When has the not been some kind of war? Economy goes up and down, with lots of fear during election cycles. As you say, people with assets gain, which has also always been the case. It's all speculation, every major super power in history has fallen and another risen. No doubt it will happen again. Will that be next year, 10 years, 100 years, no one knows.
Let's hope FD prices go to the moon before it does
I’m looking for an idea of a range I should use if/when I try to list my project. I had no intention of parting with it, so I was building it to my expectations. I’m sure a few others would be ok with the vision, but many would have little interest because of the modifications.
Quite a few years ago I had this plan of slowly building as I could with limited resources until I had a weekend show/track toy that would see limited road use as a non-daily driver. I also live in an area that has light emissions requirements (visual - catalyst presence mainly) which allows more freedom.( i.e. No good for CA) I still may hang onto it but personal issues may not allow that.
The car still has an automatic transmission – the thought was that it would be easy to drive and fine for auto-X or road track use. (if ever had the resources/need… that could be changed)
Major negatives - that likely deem it a non-highway car.
REMOVED – to cut weight or personal preference
ALL the airbag sensors and wiring
Emissions
Radio and speakers – quarter panel antennae hole shaved
Heater and A/C unit with all plumbing
Interior - including chassis mounting tabs where mounted
Full sunroof assembly
ECU
Remaining work needed:
Wiring not re-connected
Engine was a used replacement from Japan that ran when removed but currently does not run because most everything was unbolted to be blocked off, cleaned, or replaced for single turbo mod.
Needs an ECU
Need seats or oem reupholstered
OEM wheels were just painted black – needs new tires
Brake calipers/rotors were cleaned and painted - may want to upgrade
Needs a vented hood or OEM vented/painted
I'm sure there's more
Positives
No rust or damage to be repaired.
Car is clean, straight and painted.
Modified rear wheel wells so the Kirker roll bar mounts could be bolted flat.
Cover plate where A/C-heater hoses were removed
Broken plastic fender vents replaced with expanded metal
Almost every nut, bolt and part was removed for full paint coverage or to be removed/replaced/cleaned as needed.
The undercar was cleaned and undercoated. Heat shield material added in tranny tunnel.
Suspension was removed to be cleaned or painted and put back on.
Bushings were swapped with poly.
A new fuel filter was installed while working underneath.
While the fuel tank was out a FEED – Intake Collector Tank (baffle is in gas tank around the fuel pump) was added.
Sun/moonroof was blocked off
Dash was cleaned up, gauge hood repaired/replaced – plastic defroster vents replaced with new
Super Now - Rear Member Wall (plate to protect the differential when jacking)
Super Now - Jack Up adapters (to protect the pinch weld underneath when jacking)
Radium - primary fuel rail
SS oil fill neck
SS braided brake lines to replace rubber
A-Spec GT35r-s turbo kit includes an Aeromotive fuel regulator, ceramic coated 3” down pipe/manifold, aluminum secondary fuel rail, 1680 fuel injectors and a wastegate

Hopefully this is posted ok and doesn't contain too much info. If it not done correctly or in the wrong location... just remove it. I'm not tech savvy.
Thoughts on a direction to go from here would be welcome. Thanks.

Mistake. I love the silver/red combo. Would love to see it do well, but this car does not present well for 4k miles, IMO. Why would the seller not have detailed a potential $100k plus car? Terrible photos. Why in the world did they spray black paint/undercoating on the chassis!? The $148k car a few weeks ago was way nicer, I think we'll see that tomorrow.

It's hard to price a custom car in this condition. Maybe $30k USD or more to a very specific buyer. Considering the distance to go, you'd probably be better off finishing the car before selling. Interested to hear what others think, though.
So that silver on red FD with ~3800 miles BaT auction just ended. Lots of bidding in the last minutes, but not enough to get past the reserve, $69,000 final bid.
What we've got here is a failure of presentation. Some buyers that just won't reach. So, you get what what we had here today, which is the way the seller wants it. Well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.
