But maybe the investor already had $500,000 in 1993.

If you wanted to buy a car as a work of art, the FD certainly fits the bill.

Somehow the Mazda engineers snuck an art piece in among the box cars.

Why besmirch it by actually driving (it)?

Ironically, on purpose, or otherwise, we all tend to be more art collectors , than drivers of these cars.

Inflation is also a factor to consider
$33K 1993 = $62K 2021

It was featured in Sport Compact in 1999, I believe. It did have chrome mirrors from an Audi TT (as well as the aluminum Audi gas door and chrome inside rear view mirror). Bit much, but it was interesting at the time.

Seems like a good deal to me. I'm guessing the 94 currently in auction had something to do with it. It met reserve so perhaps the seller is good with it.

It really was a different era. I have the 2002 Sport Compact magazine somewhere, but here is the picture you mentioned and a shot of my 9 gauge layout. I really worked hard to design the dash layout differently in order to get all the gauges I wanted laid out like stock. No Mickey Mouse ears, no pods on top of the center of the dash, or on the A-pillar. Early Voodoo aluminum gear shift. David's original Wide Foot pedals.

A ridiculous gear shift **** and front emblem delete with 2 blobs of paint to fill the holes! That plus rear seats, but all of the original parts were included so easy to retrofit everything. Buyer got a good deal it appears.

Nice job on the gauges but where did you put the ac vents?

Yeah. I had many of them, but kept a std size titanium and a std size polished aluminum.

I am hopeful you mean the environmental controls, because, while I haven't kept much stock over time, I don't remember ever moving any vents.

The 4 aluminum ***** below the radio do the AC, fan, temperature, and air direction. I never got around to formally labeling them, but meant to.

So someone bought this and then reversed those mods back to stock? Hope the wiring is ok. Maybe they put a new dash harness in?

Loving that 94 VR base on BAT right now. I suspect it will sell for over 60k given the condition, year, model etc....

Absolutely agree. I'm probably overly optimistic in thinking it could beat $70,000, but its a very very clean example of a base car. I think in some ways the Base is the purest of the models and this one will be a great collectible that hopefully gets driven.

Yup that's it!

So freaking cool. Thanks for stirring up good memories for me. My car was 100% stock at the time, it even a had pre-cat and a service warranty lol.

I originally said $63K. Although, it is a very fine example so it wouldn't surprise if it lands closer to 70

I suspect when folks are paying over 50k for a 27 year old car they probably won't drive it much which is a shame. I'm still driving mine, it's literally my favorite car to drive, they are so much fun!!!

I love the base models too but the R2 in ssm is still my favorite in stock form.

So how do you know what's going on inside a motor that has sat for 18 years? Without opening it up to take a look?
