water pump install-caused problems

i just replaced my water pump. when i was pulling off the water pump the front housing (with both radiator hoses attached to it) came out a little bit but not completely off. when i put it all back together the engine runs crappy now, almost like the timing is off or it is missfiring. did the crank angle sensor skip a tooth? can i fix it without removing housing again? please help

Check the coolant temp sensor directly behind the water pump housing and make sure it's still connected.

but if thats not connected the only issue would be is that you would have to thold throttle at 3k for about a minute when you cold start...and the car should run fine after that

the holding the idle at 3 grand is only to prevent flooding, and i do that when i move the car and it hasnt got up to operating temp yet. i did not check the sensor yet but i doubt it got disconnected. i have been trying to reposition the crank angle sensor (may have skipped a tooth?), but i cannot find timing marks to put the engine at "top dead center". does anyone know how to find this?

The timing marks should be on the main pulley. One yellow mark and one red.

you need to explain "runs crappy"
does the idle hunt?
does it not stay running?
does the car not rev past x rpm?
is it smoking lake a banshee?

what is the year and modle as well?

its a 89 non turbo. i adjusted the sensor to where it runs smooth now but i wont idle below 2500 rpms. i just need to find the yellow mark, line it up, take out the crank sensor and align it correctly. i will clean the main pulley off really good to find the marks.

I thought the one on the bottom of the radiator tank was for cold start @ 3k rpm. The one on the back of the water pump housing goes to the ecu

Incorrect. The temperature sensor in the water pump housing feeds directly to the ECU. Fuel injected is proportional to engine temperature, and with this sensor disconnected, the ECU defaults to a "safe" setting, and the engine can run poorly. Check the connections of the green bi-pin connector at the back of the water pump.

The Temp sensor for the Fast Warm-up is located in the bottom of the radaitor.

Removing the Water pump housing cannot affect timing.

i didnt think that removing the housing would effect timing either. anyways i got it running properly, i found the timing marks and aligned the crank position sensor accordingly. but i want to get the timing perfect. i have a timing light on me. does anyone know the procedure on checking the timing?
