fan clutch question

I have a 1984 SE. I bought a 13B fan clutch from Black Dragon. The catalogue specifies it is for an 84-85 13B. It would not work. The diameter of the fan clutch is too big to fit in the fan, the holes on the mounting part are way different, and they don't line up with the spacer. I have been told the fans for the 12As and 13Bs are the same for 84. If that is the case, problem solved, they sent the wrong one. Is that the case? I know the water pumps are the same. Not many people have these right now. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

yes the actual plastic fan is the same 84-85, N304-15-200. the fan clutches are different, but i think its just the activation temp, or something, they all look the same.

Thanks a million

That is a relief. The one I bought from Black Dragon would not come close to fitting in the fan. Now, if I could find a 13 B fan clutch. Rock Auto is out of stock but uses the same part number for the 13B and 12A. Atkins rotary has a 12A but wants $263. O'Reilly has to special order and may use the same part number too. Who would have thought this would be such a head ache.

I went back to the Black Dragon catalogue. They list a different part number for the 84-85 12A fan clutch and it is $339.00
The 84-85 13B is $219.00
What's up with that?

The early (SA) fan clutches are much large in diameter. They could have sent the wrong one.

As far as the SE fan clutch, I do believe that the shaft is shorter than that of the 12A fan clutch. I believe they are different. I could be wrong though. I have a few spare fan clutches that I could reference, to include an SE fan clutch.

thanks everyone

Mine has 8 blades but my Haynes book says they had 7!? Very confusing. Rock auto uses the same part number for the 12A and 13B for 84 but they don't have them anyway. KansasCityRepu, I've been looking for an excuse to check out your place anyway. I'll pm.

the FSM says they have 8, Foxed.ca - Mazda RX-7 Manuals

the haynes is ok, if your car is the one in the book, in the case of the GSL-SE it isn't.

For j9fds3

You just made my day. If the fans are 8 blade, and same whether a 12A or 13B, then that means Black Dragon put the wrong fan clutch in the box. All I need is the fan clutch then. KansasCityRepu can help me with that. So, what started out as frustrating may work out after all. I need to get this car on the road. I am being "forced" to retire at work and this may become my car. Won't be able to keep the 2010 Challenger R/T but I like sportscars more anyway. Again, thanks, that is real good news for me.

Most of the aftermarket fan clutches I found have the wrong type of attachment. They mounting holes are not threaded. A used OEM Fan clutch is a better fit (and cheaper!).

Wow, I am glad you posted that info. That makes the used one a better deal. I wondered why there was such a big difference in the one I bought and the one one the car. I really appreciate this as you are saving me a lot of money from making mistakes.
