Shifter Return Spring
I have an Zenki model RX7 Turbo Tranny. I have been able to take the Center spring out but I do not know how to set up the new spring. I do not know how to set up the sping to that it returns from 1st and 2nd gear and enter the neutral zone. I have searched online for pictures and I find nothing. I search on these forums and could not find anything including the archives. Please help and any PICS will help. Thanks in advance.

Mazdatrix has this writeup on shifter bushing/return spring replacement on their site:
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/shiftbsh.htm
The pictures are a bit small though and not terribly helpful, I'd say.
I'm wondering about this very subject myself. When I bought my latest 7 last year, the PO said the dealership replaced all the shifter bushings but they must have left out the centering spring on the first/second side because the lever doesn't center itself from that direction. After I take care of about a million more pressing things in my life, I'd like to attempt to fix this.

thats only a bushing replacement. Im not sure about this but I thought in order to repalce the shifter spring I thought the transmission had to be out of the car so you could have access to shifter section.

its alot of freaking work. you have to do a couple of things.
it took me 2 days of searching through stupid useless threads to get a culmination of info.
1) remove tranny from car
2) remove extension shaft and all bolts to it
3) knock out retention pin
4) uninstall shifter selector
5) remove spring
6-10) opposite of 1-5.
it sucks, not worth it unless you have nothing better to do (such as waiting on parts to arrive or half a couple rockstars sitting around)
peace

yea...this seems to be a pretty common problem...my TII has had this problem since I bought the car...but there's no way I'm pulling the transmission just to replace that spring to pull the shifter back to center from 1st/2nd gear....It took almost no time to get used to it...I don't even notice it anymore..and I don't miss shifts because of it (granted I do have a MazdaTrix Short Shifter)

On the Mazdatrix shifter bushing parts page, they list a part number 17-465B-M501 which is described as "shifter spring, returns shifter to center." This is all pretty confusing.

in all, ya, not very clear. but hey, thats why were all borderline mechanics right?
the spring that they refer to is a little lock spring on the bottom of the bushing to allow more pressure onto the bushings themselfs via a "float" spring.
no, the one that we are talking about is the one INSIDE the extension housing that the shifter column slides into and returns it into neutral.

Well everything is out as of right now. I could put the sprin in but there are an L same on the spring and the U shape on the other side. The L shape goes on the front of when you take the cover off. But the thing I need is that where do I put the U same end? There are no Pics of where the U end of the spring goes to. I have it against the shifter. It has little pull on. It is supposed to have little pull or not.

Hey, I'd like to bring this one back from the dead.
Just shortened a 1st gen 5 speed to fit into an RX4 and for the life of me cannot work out how the spring goes in the extension housing.
Anyone done this and have a picture?
Thans.
