Rattle Can?

I'm not paying $1000 for a paint job right now...

A grand will get you a paint job that'll look like a basketball that someone puked on anyhow. It'll be runny and orange peely and generally completely fucked up.

At the same time, I don't wanna be the ******* that's running around in an Arctic silver car with a BRIGHT RED front bumper from a parts car.

I'm not going flat black because then I'll have to pull the door trim and mask off the interior and do under the sunroof. A complete color change is a PITA.

I'm starting this thread to relatively closely match rattlecan paints to the factory colors.

Has anyone matched Arctic Silver?

I'll stop by Wal*Mart later on and see what I can find.

paintscratch.com will sell you a spray can, just do the fender so that later on if you get the rest of the car painted they dont have to strip that off to do so.

You can get an alright single stage paint job for a $1000. I got quoted about that price from a local shop (not maaco) for all the prep + single stage paint. The guys have a good rep around town. It was gonna be $1600 for base + clear.

Why dont you just find a reputable body shop and have them color match the bumper? Sure it may be a little off, but it will probably look much better than a rattle can job.

Are you just painting the bumper?
You might get close with Duplicolor. Paintscratch.com will be best.

If you are painting the whole car, think very carefully. That enamal (or laquer) will lift if you ever put an automotive paint over the top of it. And don't trust anyone who says they can. You will have to sand it all off.

Good Luck.

I can't help on the color match, but one thing to remember any time you do a bumper/plastic piece: They make a special (rattle can or by the gallon) primer that has additives to allow it to flex. You MUST use this!!! I got mine at the local paint shop for (I think) $5 a can.. Otherwise your paint will crack off and look horrible in a few months.

The cheapest paint job in my area right now is $2K, and that is due to the bad economy.

Why don't you just get a front end bra? It is only about $90 new, and it would not look out of place on a 1980s car on which they were very popular.

I work at a sign/print shop. We can do a complete custom designed vehicle wrap for cheaper than a paint job, just a little over $1000.

So that is always an option, at the least you can wrap your bumper. Just find a good vehicle wrap shop, they have them all over the place.

I went to a place that sells paint, etc. to professional body shop guys. They had some little device that they used to match the color, then they mixed it and put it in a can. This is not wal-mart paint. It was good paint, just in a can. It was two stage (or two step, whatever) so I had to buy clear coat, too. It worked great. I was just fixing some rust spots and chipped areas, not the whole car. I spent about $200 iirc. I could have done the whole bumper for less.

You should be able to tell a body shop the paint code for arctic silver and just have them paint the bumper. A local guy here told me he could do my bumper for a couple hundred dollars.

Of course my car is white, which is the cheapest color, and probably easy to match (maybe?). I don't know about silver.

Well, $1000 crappy paint > old *** 20 year old paint, IMO. Case in point:

A year later it looks exactly the same besides the scratches it acquired. This was done by Maaco. Anyone that pays $1000+ for a paint job on a car that'll get tracked and driven the crap out of is retarded. Spend $1000 on the paint job and the rest on parts that make the car go faster.

Do you need a red bumper? Wanna meet up somewhere for a trade?

I found a white car in the scrap yard that had an arctic silver bumper that was rattle canned white... I could chip off the white in some places to reveal a good coat of arctic silver underneath... Unfortunately, they wanted over $100 for it.

Close enough is good enough. I'll get it painted later.

I'll get a Maaco paint job later when I have the time to do all the prep work and ****.

It's a time/money thing at the moment.

I've got side skirts, a rear spoiler, and rear ground effects that will go on when it's time to paint the entire car. Just have to get around to it. The rattle can will be a quick and temporary measure.

I have no use for a red bumper, and shipping back and forth stinks anyhow.

just rattle can the bumper - paintscratch.com will sell you the paint and clear in a spray can.

This should not be a paint shop debate, the guy wants to make his red bumper look a little better, for less then $30 he can do that.

hey pele, i have an artic silver fc and i rattle canned my rear bumper with duplicolor and it looks close... let me find a pic for you.

here it is. the bumper was originally white, but got color matched somewhere a while ago it looks like. the silver paint was flaking off. i just touched it up with some duplicolor from walmart. ive pointed out the areas where i touched up.

o yeah this was a couple months ago and it is starting to flake off a little so follow WonkoTheSane's advice.

well this is the best angle i could find in my pics, hope this helps.
