Help! My first FC. 2 questions
Ok, I just bought a 1991 FC convertible. 5spd., N/A.
My first question is about the bright lights. I can get mine to come on if the car is not started (they come on in the lenses under the headlights. ?) and they are only on as long as I hold the lever. If the car is started they dont come on at all. I dunno what is going on or if they are even coming on in the right spot.
Second question. I have little to no power in 5th gear. 1st-4th seem to have good power.
Hopefully someone can help. I need to get this car legal asap.

Seems normal to me.
The lights have to be up and on low beam before you can put on the high beams so that they stay on.
Well... about he power in fifth? Well its an N/A.

Ok, I'm going to try explaining the headlight problem again.
If the headlights are up and on and I pull the lever for high beams, nothing happens. If the headlights are up and off or down and off and I pull the lever only the regular beams come on, no high beam.
I've actually never seen the high beam come on. The indicator light doesnt even come on.
I'm just trying to figure out if this could simply be a crossed wire or relay problem.

possibly a bad switch? not sure if itll work for an s5 but for and s4 you can jump a coulpe wires and make thim come on. give this a shot. read this and try to jump the 2 wires i spliced into. if you jump these wires it should make the high beams come on

super common problem. its all traced back to the BODY CPU which latches the signal to the dimmer relay to turn on the brights circuit (the one near the dead pedal). I have a vert as well and ended up pulling my hair out over the problem.
You can try to find another CPU, which may or may not work (it didn't work for me)
I ended up cutting the small blue wire (which comes off the brights switch) and running it to the front of the car where all the relays hang out near the hood latch.
From there, i bought a 20 dollar latching relay from ebizzle, and wired it in such a manner that when the headlights were off, i still had the flash to pass feature by routing the switch signal to the stock location. When the headlights were on, a relay changed the flow of the switch signal to the latching relay, which made the dimming relay close.
It sounds confusing i guess, but i could do a little more in-depth writeup when i am not here at the college...

I have the same issue, all traced back to that stupid latching circuit. Seems to be almost ubiquitous among S5 Verts.
I have personally found a correlation between moisture in the air and the functioning of the CPU. When it rains, I have no high beams, and no car alarm. When it is dry, my alarm beeps and beeps when I set it until I shut the door instead of one beep, the seat belt light flashes with that beep, and the headlights will strobe on and off with the seat belt light while I am driving. It doesn't have to neccesarily rain for them to all go dead, as it does it on extremely humid days as well. Freaky....

? Wait a sec. If my high beams can just "flash" it will pass safety!? They won't flash when the reg. lights are on. The reg. lights have to be off for them to "flash".
If this will work, to hell with the high beams for a while...
