ping ping ping...
yeah well i put a new clutch in my 88 gxl the other day and took it for a few spins around the block... but when i give it hard throttle there is a metal to metal pinging sound... its definatly from the engine just dunno where... the car has 65k on it and when easily run up the rpms it doesnt make any noise... any thoughts?

Several things come to mind....
1) Check your motor mounts, the old clutch may have been slipping.... with the new one, you should be getting positive lock to the tranny, more torque on the engine, engine twisting in the mounts... bad mounts.... its hitting something.... if you have a strut bar, look to see if the altenator is smacking into the bottom of it (mine did on my GTU when i launched it before i switched to stiffer motor mounts from mazdatrix)
2) You left a tool in there somewhere...
3) did you torque all the bolts on the pressure plate????
4) You cursed at the car while putting the clutch in and the rotor gods are pissed!!!!

lol all those sound like resonable explanations... minus the leaving a tool in there lol i've done so many clutch changes on my stens that i know the proper procedures... and this was almost the same and a lil easier i might add... but it made the noise before the clutch change.. i was actually hoping it was something clutch related that would be fixed when i put in a new one

thats what i thought too.. because when i was looking for a 7 i saw one with a rusted out heat shield that made similar noise... but my car is rust free.. though it might still have a missing bolt or something... ill check it in depth tonight thank you

car might be rust free but i can guarentee you the manifold and the nuts/bolts that attach to it are not. The heat shields get ripped off their mount fairly easy. Many times the bolt just pulls through the shield. If this is the case its an easy fix. go to the local hardware store and get a few 1/4" stainless steel fender washers and use those in the problem areas. they do a great job of supporting the shield and really tighten the rattles up.
