Racing pipe has no cats, but usually a presilencer, and is sold for both NA and Turbo cars.
Downpipe is the first section from the turbo to the main cat, on turbo cars only. Some people say that the first area of piping (first two cats) on an na is a "downpipe".
Straight pipe is any exhaust leading from either the header or the turbo to the cat back with no cats or silencers, just pipe.
Mid pipe is the pipe that replaces the main cat area.

on n/a cars...

headers: 2 pipes coming off each exhaust port and either feeds into one collector or stays dual...(replaced manifold)

race pipe: keeps the stock manifold in place, and provides a pipe that connects onto the manifold and proceeds in a downward manner to either a cat or to be straight piped to the bumper...bonez makes them...they "can" be called a downpipe, but usually that term is reserved for the turbo cars...

straight pipe: usually if you "straight pipe" something you eliminate cats. i guess the straight pipe can refer to a race pipe as well, but usually the straight pipe takes out the main cat...

on turbo cars...

downpipe: a pipe that is connected onto the back of the turbo manifold and eliminates the pre-cats (i think)...

midpipe: usually this term is more coined on the turbo cars but a mid pipe could also pass as a cat replacement on n/a cars. this takes out the main cat and "can" connect to the downpipe, or a pipe that then connects to the downpipe...

down pipe is the piece thats BOLTS between the turbo and the MAIN CAT.
midpipe goes from the MAIN CAT to the muffler
Straight pipe has no cats or mufflers
Racing pipes are generally straight pipes

In the end they are all exhuast pipes, and its all just a load of US 'bolt it in' bolloux. my exhuast is only 2 pieces, the pipe comes from the turbo goes down along the length of the car, comes up a tad to a flange where it bolts to the muffler then the muffler has a 6 inch piece of pipe added to the outlet and that is the exhuast.

full length single 3 inch made in 2 parts, amazing **** us kiwi's can come up with aye? who would have thought it was that simple to have custom made stuff......

Too right! Too much money thrown at brandnames and "tuners", not enough thinking followed by custom fabrication!

this thread reminds me that I still have the stock pre-cat, and desperately need my ******* DOWNPIPE

of course someone (i.e me ) has to do the actual job of putting it on the car...

Pre-silencer: just another word for additional muffler. That's what they do: reduce noise levels. The more the quietier (??), but also more backpressure -> more resistance -> less POWA

Same thing, quiets things down. Although resonator is mostly used for intakes, in order to lower the noise that the intake does when "inhaling" air...Usually for exhausts its the sound shielding around the exhaust pipes or mufflers....

I bought the header kit from Mazdatrix, brought a pic of the RB header to my local muffler shop, and said "Make this dual all the way back". It came to $200 parts & labor.
