Oil Seals

1988 TII, 1990 shortblock.

Okay.. apparently my oil seals are toast. symptoms: get on the gas, and about 10% of the time there will be a cloud of smoke on decel. it seems to be getting worse all the time, but not at an alarming rate. if it stays like this I can probably drive it all summer without it becoming a problem.

Is there anything I can do to make it stop? would putting No-Smoke or something similar into the car clog up the oil injectors?

it kidna makes me sad because I finally got the bodywork done and now I need to do the engine AGAIN... bah!

If your oil seals are as bad as you let on, you should be smoking ALL the time, not just on decel...

Is your AAV sucking in OMP oil from the intake on decel?

Are you getting any afterburning at all?

You sure it's oil smoke?

Not necessarily, it depends on what constitutes the smoke, how big the damage is, and at what point in the rotor housing cycle (intake, combustion, exhaust) the damage is. I think more guys have smoke on startup that then goes away than anything else, which is the result of worn oil seals allowing some leakage from the rotor internals after shutdown (among other things), then sealing back up when everything is rotating & warmed up again.

mine apparently smokes a bit on startup but I've never witnessed it.

it's definatly oil smoke, it smells like it and it sticks in the air like it.

1/10th of the time when I boost and then decel to a stop in gear it will give me a nice cloud around me.. . like pretty thick, too.

the car doesn't seem to be consuming an "excessive" amount of oil, either... like 1 liter every 1500KM, which is less than my FB did considering how hard the car gets driven on occassion.

What you describe is a symptom of worn oil seals. If you smoke between shifts particularly at high rpms, you definately have worn out the oil seals. Rebuild time!

Test for oil control o-ring seals: Rev the engine to 4000 rpm with the engine warmed up to get the oil pressure up and hold it there for 30-45 seconds. If smoke starts pouring out the exhaust, it is your oil control o-ring seals. REvving the engine that high builds the il pressure high enough so that if your oil control seals are shot, oil will seep past them and into the combustion chamber.

Smoke on decel-only is usually indicative of a worn out turbocharger oil seal, not oil control rings.

I've had high rpm smoke between shifts and deceleration on an n/a not turbo. It was the oil seals, motor had 180k miles.

but then I don't think that it is the oil seals, because I just thought about it and the car frequently sees 3500-4000RPM for hours at a time cruising on the highway and never has poured smoke out the exhaust...
