oh, well that's obvious. The v-band flange was hardly welded to the turbo. The little bit of welding that was done resulted in it heat cycling, cracking, and then eventually breaking off. My brother's v-band flange was fully welded to his turbo, but after several thousand miles, the flange welding ended up cracking all the way around and after I had the turbo off and noticed this, I was able to take a screwdriver and pop the whole flange right off the turbo.
Take the turbo off, unbolt the exhaust housing from the turbo, unbolt the v-band clamp, and take the v-band flange and turbo exhaust housing to an experienced welded and have the flange FULLY welded on. Preferrably tig welding.

Some of the v-band flanges are just press fitted into the turbine housing. It looks like yours slipped out. As mentioned above, the best bet is to have it welded.

yeah it has cleanly broken around the weld at the turbo for the insert, the thing is it broke within 30 miles, am thinking maybe need to support downpipe

Actually if you look at the picture, its had at least one stich weld about 2" long on it - so it porobably had 2-3 of those on it. Many turbos come with about four passes over the V-band ferrel. My A-spec GT3574 was the same way. I however fully welded it because I was parnoid about it leaking.

Supporting the downpipe wouldn't hurt either since if its not - you're basically hanging your entire exhaust system off the back of your turbo. Not a great idea.

I'm not saying I'm not surprised it broke - I'm saying it was indeed welded.

Many turbo's are sold like that (ever bought an A-spec kit? RX7 store turbo?) and function fine. Fully welding it is a much better idea IMO, but I ran a T04-R like that (four, inch long welds) for a good while without issue. My exhaust however was fully supported....if you left the exhaust system on the car and removed the turbo the downpipe wouldn't move from its location more then a 1/2"

yeah i know. i didnt mean for the question in my previous post to be directed at you, more to the OP. a flex pipe would be a good investment to help prevent this in the future.
