I was just sitting here thinking. Can you really tell a difference with an MSD box over the stock ignition? Or is it just a reliable update?

Does anyone know whether you'd be able to use the MSD 6A with the S4 Banzai adapter for the FD Power FC?... Maybe that makes sense... I have confused my self. With the adapter, you must modify your trailing coil pack. I was just wondering if you'd be able to use the MSD 6A just as easily..?

The MSD 6A only gets installed on the leading coil (unless you are planning on installing 3 of them). The is no issue installing any ignition amplifier with our PFC kit and modified Trailing coil pack.

I had one on my '87 turbo. It didn't do jack squat for power, mileage or anything else, except a slightly smoother idle.

I was thinking of putting it on my 87 TII. I guess I won't now.

It's certainly situation dependent. My old '87 TII had a mild streetport on the intakes and exhausts, no emissions, running about 10-12psi boost on the stock ECU and an S5 turbo. So a pretty mild car. The MSD did nothing for me. The car was no faster at the track before and after the MSD, my mileage didn't improve at all, driveability didn't change one bit.

On a really high power, heavily modified car maybe it would make a difference. I don't know. The stock ignition system on the RX-7 is really quite good.

Ignition amplifiers make the most difference in vehicles running lots of fuel and boost. High RPM break up occurs when there is not enough electricity to keep the spark plugs from "blowing out".

I agree. My brother races a 89 NA in SCCA, he uses MSD ingnition coils and box. This makes sense on a race car. I am not gonna be running constant high rpm's or boost on the street.
My 87 TII has BNR stage 2 turbo, rtek 1.7 with 720 secondaries, walbro pump, all emissions removed, RB downpipe.
Maybe when I turn up the boost to 12-15psi and 1600 secondaries then I might need it.

might want to add that it also reduces spark plug life significantly.

most people will hardly notice it being there unless running it on moderate to highly modified setups.

it's a big upgrade for the 1st gens and earlier but not so much beyond that, stock FC coils are quite beefy and more than capable to 350whp and even higher without an ignition amp.
