cliffnotes from what you'll get in a search:
-anything is theoretically possible
-the idea is not really feasible, as you'd have to put your shifter either like 4 inches in front of or behind where it is now
-RX8 trannys have about the same gear ratios as a TII tranny, with an extra gear added between 3rd and 4th or something like that
-An RX8 tranny is more of a creampuff than a TII tranny, thus in conjunction with the last two points negates any need for a swap.

I just did a quick search for "rx8 transmission" and came up with these topics:

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=724871
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=659568
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=652838
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=651618
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=545408
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=449889
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=403986

And that was just on the first page.

As you can probably guess, this is covered very often here. Before asking any question, it's vital to check the FAQ and perform a search or two. You will get your answer much more quickly then if you had posted the question.

why do people think that more gears = better?

Gearing is much more than "how many"

also, gear ratios for one car may may have a huge variance than another application.

I think the reason more people think more gears are better is because they think more gears = more speed.

To a certain extent they are right. more gears usually means closer gear range, sometimes higher top speed or better bottom end. It really depends on how the ratios are.

More gears does not mean more speed though.

Because if you aim for the same speed with 5 evenly-spaced gears vs. 6, you're gonna get there faster with 6, unless you suck at shifting, at least for particularly high-speed applications.
