stylEmon - what did you use for a gauge? I plan on doing the same but am still hunting for a small form factor digital voltmeter that is configurable.
You can find all sorts of digital display gauges here.

or google search square digital gauge.

Here is my write up.

It's the right diameter (although the rim is a little thin for my taste), it fit and was an interesting design.

Oh, and it was $5.

This is a REALLY ingenious idea. Also, telling us you found the matching 17-pin connector in both a '87 Subaru XT and '93 Legacy is a great help too. by chance, the connector looks a LOT like the 17-pin connector that the HVAC logicon uses. Could someone verify this for me? It'd answer a lot of questions about how to swap the stereo and logicon.

I vote sticky and/or FAQ reference on this

Since this thread got revived, I'll provide an update.

Everything still works, the clock adjust spindle has not been snapped off and I've used the cupholder once (it was fine also, I just don't drink in my car a lot).

The whole point of the relocation was to free up the space on the dashtop for the aftermarket gauges.
The gauges have been installed there and are more easily visible compared to the old center console location, but still not as good as they could be.
It seems that my favorite gauge location is just where Mazda put 'em...in the main cluster.
I've been lazily considering options but have yet to actually begin.
Before I rip into my stock cluster, I need to find a replacement/backup unit, just in case.
S4's are commonly found in my junkyard but S5's are pretty rare.

Very true. I have a question for you since you're adept in the wiring and what not, could you wire a low oil or coolant light? And put them in a din panel of some sort? That would eliminate my need for the idiot light cluster and my mounts for gauges are limited due to my hydraulic ebrake placement in the center console. I have no idea how to wire one of those panels up but a VW Baja Bug I had when I was 15 had a speedo and a oil pressure/ generator warning light and thats it.

I would think that wiring up separate warning lights as you suggest would be fairly simple using the stock wiring.
I haven't looked into the details (since I didn't need to) but I imagine it would be very easy.

If I were you I'd put the warning lights right in front of you...maybe on top of the cluster surround or on top of the steering column trim...someplace that would immediately attract attention.

hmm I didn't even think about using the stock wiring...touche good sir. I'm at a loss as to why half of my idiot cluster doesn't work, could be cold soldering I suppose. So would I basically, de-pin the plug and (I'm assuming the factory set up has a pwr/gnd for each light) basically wire each pwr/gnd into individual lights?

And thanks for addressing this in your thread, sometimes I get carried away with questions.

IIRC, both the factory low coolant and low oil level lights are provided with keyed +12v and grounded by their respective sensors.
If so, changing the location of the warning light would be a trivial matter from a wiring standpoint.

hmmm I think I understand what you're saying. I could always depin something trivial like the ebrake warning light and try that out.

Must have missed this the first time around. I did something similar...

DIY gauge pod:

Pull dash and lengthen idiot light harness:

Nice work as always Clokker! I just picked up a 929 MC/booster pair based on your recommendations.

I've got something in the works, I'm thinking I'll run the warning light gauge pod to house a few gauges and have the essential warning lights wired up somehow. I saw on summit you can buy ones that have their own sensors but it would be cool to utilize factory stuff if at all possible. My car is weird, it doesnt buzz at redline or beep when the door is open and lights are on haha so perhaps my factory wiring isn't any good to begin with.

Colorado Auto & Parts, pretty much right at Santa Fe and Oxford.

At one point this summer there were three S4's at the same time, currently, none.
