Just a Whistle Away

Anyone ever had their 1st gen start whistling on a hot day? My '84 SE does, and loud too! It comes from the rear of the car. It's an attention getter - everybody looks at'cher RX!

It does it on very hot days whenever my fuel drops below about half a tank. It's done it for years now. When I'd take it to the dealer (way back when), they'd look at me the same way they looked at me when I tried to explain the surging idle problem - like I was ET or sumthin!

Someone told me, once, to vent the fuel cap by drilling a very small hole in it. That wud stop the whistling. I did and it did! But then I started smelling fuel vapor all the time in the summer. Bummer... So, I sealed the little hole and just let it whistle.

Well, anyways, thanks to Guckman - I discovered the RX-7 Holy Grail: the Mitchell Manual! And it turns out the problem is a bad Check & Cut Valve for the fuel tank. I haven't found a new one yet, but will change it soon as I do.

Hope you find this info useful...

Mine has this eary whistle as well, coming from the back. I figured it had something to do with fuel. I never hear it when I am driving, music too loud probably, but always when I turn off the car. It "whistles" for a bit and then slowly dies off. Though it's not really a whistle, more like a "eeeeeeeeeeeee" kinda like a piezo.

Right on.

Yep, I've had it now and then on hot days with a near empty tank. I used to think it was engine noise through the stereo.

It's back by the fuel tank. These are "clippings" from the Mitchell Manual pg 157, 187, & 243:

OEM PN is 8341-42-910
