Doing the ATF this week....

Ok, I know people have already asked a million times about this, but I don't feel like looking for the posts. Now, will I have to replace all four plugs or just the leading? And I'm guessing I have to change the oil also? How much ATF should I use(I bought a quart)? How long should I let the car sit? I'm not too busy this week, so.....a few days I'm guessing? Thanks people.

replace all plugs and change oil. the longer it sits the better. a few days shoud work fine. i think you only need a few table spoons for each rotor.

it would be cool if you posted compression resuslts before and after you do the ATF treatment

I squirted ATF in my rotors until it started coming out, then I rolled it backward in 5th until all of them were soaked. Then I let it sit for 2 days, going out every 8-12 hours and pushing it back and forth in my drive a few times.

After you start it up and smoke for awhile, take it for a spin. Then get your plugs and oil changed.

Proper procedure from A to Z:

1) Buy ATF
2) Buy 4 BUR9EQ (all colder, just for a minor "upgrade")
3) Let engine cool down completely
4) Remove EGI fuse and/or Main
5) Remove lower wires
6) Using a squirter, squirt ATF 2-3 times into each hole
7) Bump starter for 1 sec
8) Repeat squirting for 3 or 4 times (dont put in more than 100cc ATF)
9) Put plugs and wires back in (to keep ATF in)
10) Leave car alone for 7-8 hours
11) Bump starter for 2-3 secs
12) Repeat "Leave car alone" 2 times (totally for 24 hours)
13) Remove plugs, and bump starter to let as much ATF as possible pour out
14) Put plugs/wires/fuses back in
15) Start car (it may take some tries) OUTSIDE OF YOUR GARAGE
16) Let it idle for 10 minutes
17) If the smoke has cleared, stop engine, replace plugs
18) Take car on a highway and redline it for a minute or so

You are set!!!

Rolling

rolling the car around in 5th is just a more precise way to distribute the ATF around. It's probably a better way, but probably not that much better, I just bumped the starter.

I bought a funnel with a long hose attached, very usefull.

I disconnected all the wires from th plugs and just left them off till I wanted to restart, if you do this, don't get them mixed up.

Just before I started it back up I pulled all the plugs, and then stuffed some paper towels down in there, bumped the engine a lil, replaced them with more clean towels, bumped a couple more times, this should reduce the smoking.

If you are interested in a compression test this would be an easy time to do it because most of the procedure is the same. YOu can probably buy a lil kit with gauge and everything at Wal-Mart for like $30 (they might even let you return it)

There is an easier and more accurate way than bumping the starter or rolling the car backwards. Use a ratchet on the alternator pulley, and watch the main pulley mark(the timing marks)spin360 degress. Every 360 degree turn of the main pulley is 1/3 of a rotor turn, so squirt, turn 360, squirt, turn 360, etc...

Has anybody done the ATF trick on a TURBOII? the current owner of my old baby is planning it and before he does I want to make sure its safe. Also, the reason he's doing it is due to supposed compression issues obviously, however the reason for the concern is due to no/poor start when engine is at proper operating temp. I read (Racing Beat catalog i believe) that compression drops significantly when hot, and that held true on the one rx7 we got at my old dealership. If anybody can provide any input on this, and also other possible causes to the poor warm start issue it would be greatly appreciated. FYI - cold start is so easy you could prob use a AAA battery so the starter etc. is fine. Thanks

I'm tired of seeing him leave the thing running from the time he leaves his house til he goes to bed at night to avoid the prob.

the ATF trick works for Turbo 13Bs as well.

Spark plugs are no more than $5 each for the NGKs.

Turbo II plugs are a little more than $5 a piece because they are platinum tipped. They are more like 9$ a piece where I live. I used to use them in my N/A.

The process above (using ATF) is supposed to improve compression by cleaning build up in the motor and burning it out.

when you do a compression test you should get either atleast 100psi or 7 kg/cm^2 depending on what kind of gauge. you should get 3 bounces if you use a normal compression tester....

Man let me warn ya, DO NOT use your beer bong to get the ATF in the spark plug holes.

I've cleaned that damn thing like 20 times and it still tastes like ATF!

erm.. The non-planitum ones will work just fine in a turbo.. Platinum ones just last a bit longer than non-platinum ones. If you ask me, i'd rather just buy/install new plugs twice as often, and save twice as much.. That way, i end up with more "spare" plugs to use atf on..
