ATF Trick

i've been reading a bit on the ATF trick in the archive and it sounds like it works miracles.

will it help restore an engine that has overheated a couple of times? or am I out of luck there?

The engine runs fine as of right now, but I havent taken it out on the highway in a while, just driven up and down the street while i work on it. but if this does what they are saying, can i avoid a rebuild/rebuilt engine?

thanks.

ATF treatment should be considered a last ditch effort in trying to get an engine to run, and not any sort of magic potion or treatment for increased engine life.

In fact done improperly, or the stock seals are in poor condition already, and the ATF treatment will waste the seals on the engine.

It will not help a engine that has been overheated at all, and in all likelyhood the ATF treatment for such a damaged engine will result in manditory rebuilding.

There are many varying opinions. I'm going to leave mine, and then ditch the thread before it becomes a flame war...

I used it in the my engine last september (before putting the car to sleep for 6 months to work on the tranny, engine manifolds, and what not). After the said 6 months, the engine started over in less than a half crank.

It ran like **** because we had alot of adjusting/tuning to do, but it started up faster than it ever had before-- for being asleep for 6 months, I'd say thats impressive.

that said... it did have some drawbacks, mainly:

And yes, that smoke is ALL auto tranny fluid (at least to my knowledge its what it smelled like, and there was enough of it, that we are certain that the tranny fluid just took awhile to burn off-- we used quite a bit last fall)

So... EXPECT smoke if you do this. In other words, I wouldn't suggest doing this when your neighbors are home. They will probably call the fire department...

Hi, first of all I'm not a pro. But from what I have read/experienced the ATF trick will not help an engine that has been overheated. More then likely your coolant seals are probably shot. Use the search there is a test to figure out if they're shot. By the way I did the ATF trick a couple months after getting my car and I noticed no difference at all.

If you want to bring life back to a motor that you think is suffering compression loss from carbon build up use something designed for that. Amsoil makes a product called powerfoam and i swear by it, it has restored power in many cars we've worked on and is made for it. You just spray a whole can into the intake with the car running and when that can is empty you shut off the car and let the foam sit for 15 min and then run it all out and i swear it works, check out amsoils web site

ah, the local snake oil salesman.

Listen kids, all of these wonderful products will work in the short term. This thread ahd all the info you needed in Icemarks post. Bottom line, your trying to cure a 13-18 year old car with a 2.00 fix. You get what you paid for here. At some time (in the very very very near future) you will pop an apex seal taking out a rotor housing and rotor. Your engine is OLD and has many worn parts. Do it right or be warned!

I just used the mmo to get my jdm engine started that sat for aprox 2 years front rotor had compression on only one face, rear had no compression at all. I used about 5 days turning the engine by hand to make sure all the seals got treated. sat I turned it with the starter and the front rotor had compression on all faces the rear rotor sounded more like it was tring to spit on each face. I cleaned up the plugs reinstalled the egi fuse and started it up, wow did it smoke let it run for about 1/2 an hour looked like sea fog moved in. took it back out of the garage today recleaned the plugs turned the engine by hand and strong compression is heard on all rotor faces and was much harder to turn. I do not know if the mmo will clean it up as well as the amsoil but it sure worked for geting it to start. as for reconditioning an engine theres only one way and thats rebuild. but for my experance with my low mile jdm engine the mmo works great for getting those seals unstuck from sitting.

Getting it started is one thing...Using ATF as regular maintenance or a magical cure-all is another.

Some1 just try the amsoil power foam instead of the atf for once the power foam isn't bad for the motor its made for it although i do belive it isn't recommended for turbo engines so sorry tii guys but i swear it works, i'm not being a salesman i'm simply saying it worked for me it was the only thing i did to my car and it felt so much better and gained 4 tenths in the 1/4 i don't know if it was all the power foam could have been the driving too but i know it helped

I remember starting one of my first Rotary's after it had been sitting for nearly a year. I used a bit too much ATF and the results were similar to Kenteth. However about 5 min later the fire dept DID arrive ready for battle. It's very difficult trying to explain to a trained fire marshall that all that smoke billowing from my garage is "normal"

Wear a face mask/breathing filter when doing this in an enclosed area. And like Aaron said, doing this on a regular basis is a different story all together.

Regards,
-Markus

LOL Kenteth. That is truly hilarious. Never tried the ATF trick as my car still had cats at the time, but I did the carb cleaner trick, and that netted some good results.
