I've removed the 3 bottom screws, but the top half and the bottom half are still solidly connected to each other. Is there some trick to separating them from each other?

Hopefully the previous owner didn't glue them together or something

The 2 pieces are separate from the column itself, just attached to each other

They just pull apart. Try squeezing the top inwards (length wise) and pull straight up. There are tabs (that's what the squeezing is hoping to release) and guide pins you don't want to break.

If it's not coming off easily - it's very likely there is adhesive.

Don't squeeze the upper because the tabs are on the lower.

Gently pry each upper side outward with your fingers at the little single switch holes and simultaneously lift up. Do this while the lower is still attached by the 3 screws to the column.

There are little teeth on the upper and clips on the lower and both of those can easily break so be careful separating them.

 

Yes, important to not break anything.

Also, make note of the screws. Two front screws are self-tapping, rear screw is a machine screw. Don't mix them up.

Countless FD's I've worked on have had those screws wrong, so dumb.

I'd like to revive this thread for an issue im having:

installed 99 spec nardi (i think its just a miata) steering wheel. Now, everytime i move the wheel with the column cover on, theres a plastic on plastic creaking noise.

At first I thought it was the wheel itself, but with the shroud removed, no more noise.

From what I can tell its the airbag/horn harness rubbing against the lower part of the cover.

Did I re-install this wrong?

is the end of the lower cover supposed to fit *tucked inside* the lower dash panel, or over it?

EDIT** nevermind, yes, the shroud does cover the lower panel slightly. the creak was indeed caused by the horn/airbag harness but just not in the spot I suspected. I tucked in the harness from *behind* the wheel* (only had to remove the shroud) and its gone.

I LOVE finding and fixing squeaks/rattles/creaks!
