why did you buy a 2nd gen rx7?

my first car was a 2000 civic. i gave it back to my mom and bought msyelf a 1987 toyota mr2 which was very fun and had a very reliable engine (the legendary 4age).

i bought a 1986 mazda rx7 less than a year ago with about 163000 miles on it (it is old enough to buy alcohol but i'm still 6 months shy lol). I did my part of researching the rx7. my friends advised me not to get it because it was a rotary. My dad's fc broke down about 10 years ago. Against the warnings and previous experiences i decided to get the rx7 anyways. I bought it for $2000 from a original owning family who maintained it well. I never regretted it. Since i bought it, the alternator broke, the alternator belt snapped, fuses blew, spark plugs fouled but absolutely no engine problems. I love this car because its a rotary and its fun to drive not to mention the owners club is strong, very active, and very supportive as well as informative.

i am a proud rx7 driver, just like my father before me, just like all of you guys

My rx7 has been in my family since December 1991. The car is in fact 6 or so months younger then me.

Ever since I was a kid I had a sort of attraction to the car.

The car was originally owned by my grandma, my dad took ownership when his truck got totaled. I'm next in line once I can legally register the vehicle (Gotta have valid drivers lic I guess) he's leaving though so my grandma will regain ownership for a few more months -_-

The cars pretty much mint besides some interior parts are broken, belts don't work (Common s5 problem) the rear right brake light is broken (temp fixed) theres also bodydamage on the front right, aged paint.

I've been a member on these forums since I was 11/12 can't recall (not under this name) always been my dream to drive a rx7 (Now I do every week, nice to fullfill a chidlhood dream lolol)

I don't like other rx7's much, kinda Sevencist, I only like 2nd s5, I'd take a SA/FB free but I wouldn't buy one, I just don't like the look. FD3S just are expensive and I like the 2nd gen look not the 3rd gen lolol.

can't wait for this summer, trannyswap (Prolly not done by me a buddy) I wonder how quickly I'll wear out the clutch (I never really drove a stick b4)

!

I've driven a lot of cars for my age (automatics, once a stick but it was one of those mexican farm worker trucks, I didn't know the ******* clutch went that far down lolol and my buddy didn't tell me, so I just looked like a retard revving the engine then finally figured out to push it down. My rx7 has been the best driving the car out of all, even though its a non-turbo automatic shes still a 7 x]

I remember seeing a 'vert in 89 (junior in HS at the time) and thinking. "I will have one of those before I die, that thing is dead sexy!" Time passed, and I had several food service/lame jobs, and the 20 grand sticker was out of reach. Finally, 11 years later, long forgotten, a co worker's GF drives up in a black 88 vert. So I tell my coworker, "If she ever wants to sell that car, have her call me first." Six months later, she decides she wants a bigger car, so she buys a Lebaron, and I drop 3k on a pristine bone stock vert. It had ~125k on the odo. First 'vert I ever owned, and I will probably be buried in it

I was originally after an STi, was looking at an 00' 2 door(JDM yo!) but had always been interested/turnt on by rotars. Then after starting to get pissed off by all the dumb "muzzas" driving WRXs and thinking they are invincible and understeering into poles, which pushed the insurance costs up to 5k. I decided to go for the RX, FDs were out of my price range so i picked up the "best" FC i could. Checked out a few, some good some bad alot with out a roadworthy which i am pretty sure would be near impossible to pass for an RX. Until i came across my first love, a white S5 turbo aus-delivered. Had a huge amount of KMs on it, hadn't been cared for too well and had been in an accident because of the previous owner.

But i knew i couldn't let anyone else get it, was bone stock which is what i wanted. So that was that. Day after getting it, me and a mate jacked it and changed the exhaust out, put the airbox back in and did some other minor stuff. Hasn't given me many problems except that somehow a bolt went missing from the main pulley and the engine had an abortion of oil. But can't beat driving through tunnels! :O

i have always been an FB owner but i remember wanting a 10th Anniversary edition back in high school(this would be in the mid 90's). i ended up test driving one at a local dealer and when i went back a couple days later to buy the car and the car was sold. months pass and the dissapointment sets in and i go to wilmington ohio and buy a non running brilliant black 88 TII. the car is flawaless(leather interior perfet paint) other than the non running engine. i enlist in the army and have to sell the car. i fell in love with this TII and i felt as if it were pried from my hands. many years go by and i get out of the army and i get married yada yada yada(i own like 5 FB's at this point). my next door neighbor knocks on the door telling me he wants to buy his buddy's 7 and wants me to look at it for him. i agree to and then begin to pry. he tells me that the car is an 88 turbo with white wheels and a white exterior. i went over there with him, found the 10AE and we determine that the engine is bad. he now does not want the car. i of course jump all over it. i learn that it is the SAME car i drove at the dealership some 7 years ago. i replaced the engine and many interior parts and am trying to restore this car, as it is my favorite 7 that i own. once i secured my 10AE i now was on a quest to buy another brilliant black 88TII. i end up buying one in similar condition to the one i previously had. i went to KY to buy the car and i now have the collection that i have always wanted! other than owning 4 FB's and 1 SA on top of the TII's.

i havent always known about these cars but i was introduced to them for the first time last year. i came upon it by complete accident. my friends wanted to go look at one up in maine and i decided to tag along. so we pull up on this white car (yes it had blue stripes but paint can be replaced) it had tinted bronze glass, dual exhaust, black leather interior, it was a standard, it was a turbo, it was a special edition known as the 10ae (which at the time i didnt know anything about other then there was only 1500 made in the usa) and it was as old as me born in '88. it was everything i ever wanted in a sport car and when i told the guys i wanted to buy the car they looked at me like i was nuts and talked to me about it explaining it was a lot of work and money since they both had they own 7s they knew more then me, about them but i didnt care. both the boys i went up with that day have helped me a lot and provided me with answers to my silly questions and its also nice because it has helped me and my dad come together working on my car. theres not much for a 19 yr old girl and her dad to talk about and for that i wouldnt trade this car for the world. i hope to restore this car and have this car forever and when i get my own place this car will be garaged as it should be.

My 1984 Camaro fell apart like a time bomb at 50K miles. I swore off American sports cars and after extensive research I chose the RX-7 over the other Japanese sports cars of the era.

I originally bought it for my daughter in 2003. It was from a guy I worked with - one owner, garage kept, all documentation, etc.), and a fully loaded car. Against all of my begging and pleading, she paid over $3,000 on a hot pink paint job - thus guaranteeing dad from driving her car.

HOWEVER - She convinced me yesterday to trade cars with her (because the baby seat and father cannot ride in the RX-7), so I now own a hot pink RX-7.........

I registered on this forum in 2003, and this is only my 2nd post, because it was her car - now I'm back for a while.

I was going to pull the trigger on a used 2002-2004 Z06 corvette next spring, but if I can convince myself that I can build this RX-7 into a reliable, emission friendly, approx. 400 rwh street ride, I'll probably change the paint scheme and keep it.

I'll post pics and progress, as I lay down the fishing rod, quit riding the cycle, and get started on the adventure of building a 2nd street rod.

I dunno I just had a thing for them. I learned about the rotary engine before the piston engine on howstuffworks.com, it was so simple I loved my first car and it was a lot faster than an NA FC (in acceleration, all that mattered to me at the time) but I still would've traded mine for one in a hearbeat. Main things though, 8k redline, RWD, perfect weight distribution, rotary, big brakes, rare, etc. Fun enough to satisfy me and slow enough to keep me out of cop trouble (No. VA sucks). I got into cars at age 15 and always hated seeing the same types of cars in the import scene. EVOs, STis, HONDAS, etc. I always wanted to be different, even though I'll spend more money in the end. My dream garage would definitely be a mint FD daily driver/street fun car, FC track car and a restored GSL SE with minor suspension/hp mods.

haha I needed one more money pit to waste all my time and energy on...... so i bought 2 of them.... cheap and now they have sucked my wallet dry and starting to nip at my pocket change AND my piggy bank.... and i am in the process of trimming them down and possibly selling one because we have a baby on the way. I def put the time and energy into one of them though and it's my 88 gxl. I traded my 94 GSR for it and it was stock with cut springs and no power steering or a/c... now it rides on tokico's with 500's up front and 275's in the rear (Eibach), a prothane kit, intake with weapon R dry filter, 550 primaries, and a reworked throttle body with no butterflies, modified air flow meter, full time 6 port, straight thru 2.5 dual exhaust with mazdaspeed resonator, hre knock off 17x7.5's, a sparco sprint driver seat, wheel and ****, autometer a/f, oil pres, and temp, and stewart warner pyro, S-AFC II, Limited slip, aeromotive fpr, walbro pump, wide angle rear veiw, modified pedals (better heel-toe action), and the ugliest single stage black gloss urethane paint job I could spray in my garage with the door up at 38 degrees..... it's ugly but it's got 143,918 on it right now and the original motor absolutely screams at 8000 every day.... so i might or might not get rid of it.... probaly not because this banked, 3 lane, 40 yard radius, 120 degree left hander reminds me everyday on the way home how bad i want it....

Talking why did I buy a 2nd gen.

I have been into rotarys since I can remember. Back in the early 80s my uncle had a bad *** street ported 12a RX-2 coupe in Puerto Rico that would give me goose bumps from excitement every time I would hear it start and rev up. My dad wasn't around much so my uncle being like my father started to take me to the drag strip when I was around 7. Ever since then I obsessed about rotary powered cars. I drove my first fb when I was 16, it was my cousin's 83 limited and I thought that that was the car I wanted, but 4 years later my frind changed how I felt about 7s forever by letting me test drive his 87 t2 and drive it like I stole it. So now I'm on my third FC and can say that I will always have a RX-7. Rotary for life. Ps. 1st was the white , my 2nd was on primer and 3rd and current is my red vert.

The towing company I live next to picked it up as abandoned. It was fuel flooded, battered on the front end, but overall complete. Got it for $300, no title.

Since then, it's overheated nine times, spat out its A/C belt, had both auxiliary port actuators freeze close, worn the almost new front tires completely bald in 3k miles from positive camber, blew up its wheel bearings in the rear, and the seat belts are stuck.

Overall I put about 2K into it, including original cost, to get it on the road. The first drive was worth it.

I wanted to try a rotary, needed to be manual and RWD, and was looking at coupes near me. This vert came up for $1900 (which was quite a bit under comparable coupe prices, it was winter tho, so go figure), and i couldnt resist. almost 4 years and quite a bit of money later, im still happy with her

My buddy had one and I started helping him work on it. I was originally trying to get a 240. I ended up calling on like 8 240s this summer and all sold under me. Finally my buddy said that I should get a 7, at this point I just wanted a project car so I found one, called, and got it the next day. It was rusty as crap and needed major work. I sold it 3 months later and bought my 88 gxl for the same price, and I will never sell her.

It was my first car(Free/no motor/mismatched exterior/automatic/lean papers/and in a parking lot which I had 2 pay 2 get it out also). 87 arctic blue...gave me tooo many headaches(5speed swap/blown coolant seals...etc..etc) but I LOVED IT!!! Sold it 2 my cuzo cause I had no job 2 pay for it and he destroyed her. He literally got into soo many problems wit her dat he stripped the **** out of it without telling me and junked her. I felt like beating his *** wen I found out. Anyway regardless of all the headaches I'm on my second one now and I just hit 20. The FC is just sexy!! There's not a lot of them around my area so it just DEMAMDS so much respect from the little ricers and the old skool guys. Gotta love the sound of a rotary.
