Tool Question? steering lash

Can anyone tell me the tool needed to tighten up the steering under the hood? I believe it is referred to as setting lash. My steering wheel turns almost 3in in either direction before you feel the resistance of the linkage actually turning the tires. the adjustment is made under the hood with some really big open wrench i think. anyone?

on the 81.5+ cars the factory tool is the same socket that they use on the transmission, so its like 3 feet long.

since its not the transmission, i think you can use a normal socket (its big, but i'm not sure how big, 36?)

then i think its a 14mm and flathead screw driver.

have a quick search, there are 2 adjustments so you can either play with it like i did, or read up.

the early box is just a 14mm and flathead.

i like to raise the front end, so you can easily spin the steering wheel

Do a search in the archive for steering gear adjustment. There are a couple good write-ups.

your exactly right, having the front completely off the ground is the only true way to know when your setting it properly. as for the tool i am still a little confused as to what i need to adjust. going to consult the tech manual and hopefully get some guidance from the local Kragen. i thought it had to be an open end wrench to grab onto the nut since the steering column or whatever goes into the box in the same area. hmm

open the hood and look at it! there is a BIG lock nut, and under a little cover is a 14mm and flathead

Don't forget to replace all of the other wear items before you start messing around with the box...
