Tailshaft Housing

I bought a transmission for my 83 (from an 83) with the tailshaft housing off, he said it needed to be bolted back on.

I'm VERY new to transmissions and am not sure how to do it. Does anyone know where there's a guide or FSM that shows the procedure? I'm guessing the forks need to be in the right position before I just start smacking it together. lol

Here's what I currently have:

Do I need to take anything off my transmission?

I would probably replace the seal in the end of the tailshaft prior to installation and put a new gasket on the small front cover.

Then put sealant on the mating surface of the housing.

In order for the shift rod to find its place in the shift forks you have to position it properly prior to installing the tail shaft. Look down into the hole where the shifter goes. You will see the cup the shifter goes in. Move this all the way to the left. After you bolt it together and move the shifte cup to the right it will move into the gap of the shift forks.

Yeah I bought a whole "gasket/seal kit" for it, haven't really seen what that included though.

So do I need anything out of my transmission to put together what you see or do I have what I need?

Thanks!

I'm thinking just the shifter and speedo gear, if it is not in the new one, if it is in the new one take it out before you assemble things, and then put it back in.

forks need to the in neutral, slide the rod on the trans housing with shifter tower loose and not bolted down. While holding the assembly with your left hand, use your right hand to line up the shifter rod to the forks. once your doing it, you will know what Im talking about.

also, slight dab of silicone is needed to prevent any leaks and if the rear trans seal is not damaged, there is no need to replace it.

All three shift fingers have to be lined up with each other. There is an interlock on the rods that the fingers are on that prevents more than one of them from moving forward or back - all three have to be in the neutral position before you can move any of them.

The easy way to assemble these is with the shift tower bolted down and the shift blockin the tower removed from the main shift rod. You put the rod in the fingers, slide the tailhousing most of the way on, then make sure the shift rod goes into the shift block as you set it in the last couple inches.

yea i figured it out lol. After some swearing took place taking that roll pin out again. Installing is far easier for me than removing. what worked for me on Installing was to position the shift rod facing down to slide the tail housing into position and bolt hand tight. The holes won't be lined up for the pin. Turned the rod as much as I could clock wise then wedged a punch between the rod so I could move the block only and repeated this till the holes lined up. I strongly suggest you stick a punch in the hole and test the gears before Installing that **** of a pin lol. Can finally get this engine in the car
