My 84 GSL smokes a little on start up but goes away in a minute or two. I was concerned about this when I first got the car a year ago but it hasn't gotten worse (except when I put in some 10-30W oil - use 20-50W) and the oil consumption is not a problem, so I just stopped worrying about it.

Thanks inittab for the reference to Felix's page, my 7 also has the external O ring leak around the 12A logo which I slowed down quite a bit with some engine sealer so it is now just a "cosmetic" problem, as Felix describes it.
