Mechanical Secondaries-A how to?

Hey, I've been reading more about mechanical secondaries and I'm suprised to find that they sound exactly what I need. I enjoy the idea of vacuum secondaries, but it just doesn't seem like mine are working as quickly as they should so I'd like to do some carb work. In total, I'd like to remove as much smog stuff as possible without hurting performance and add mech. secondaries. I've found alot of stuff on what to do about the rats nest but none on the secondaries. Anybody have some pointers at what I should look at doing and what I should look at removing. I should note that this is still going on a DD and I'm not gung-ho for killing driveability, even if it means leaving some emissions in.

Thanks! That helped a ton! Maybe this won't be a winter project and I'll get it done tomorrow.

Alright, I've been working on it the past few days and I just cannot seem to get it right. I have no bog after like, 2000rpm, which makes me think the secondaries aren't opening quick enough or something (I've made sure they are opening up 100%) and After I open them up I can't get the idle below 1800 or so. The wire linkage I made is binding up. Anybody have any pics of the linkage they have used?

if the wire u used is too tight, it will cause binding.

try lifting up slightly on the accelerator linkage if the rpms decrease then your throttle cable is too tight

Thanks, but I think I found the problem. I FINNALLY found a thread with pics how to do mechanical secondaries and I found I put the wire in the wrong place. Long story, I won't bother telling ya where but it was in a wrong enough place that it wouldn't work but right enough that it would sorta work. I put it in the right place and just by moving the linkages with my hand all looks good. I'd fire it up and try it but I'd wake up everyone in a five block radius. Tommarow should be promising, either I'll get to school faster than ever or I'll have to drive the truck. Cheers

Let me know if it does not work for you, I can shoot you some pictures of where to wire it up at. Mine currently has a weld bead there, but it is all the same.

Ha no, all did not go well this morning. I got the mech. secondaries right but after all my tinkering I thoroughly fouled the plugs. After I got home I got some of my dirtbike plugs in there to do for now. There almost identicle except not as nice or high performance. I don't know whats up but the motor runs really rough and it isn't nearly as fast anymore. After 5000 it just signs off. I hope this is corrected tomorrow when I get the right plugs for it. BTW, you can find the link to the pic'd mech secondary thread in the sticky'd FAQ.

get good plugs in it, don't substitute some 'dirt bike plugs'. It will run like ****. Get some good NGK's in there.

One of my favorite setups uses a certain "dirt bike" spark plug that is modified.

I got new plugs today, I got the stock BR8EQs. The 'dirtbike' plugs I used were just BR8ES's that I got out of my YZ. I just used them to get me to the autoshop to get the NGKs in.

Final update, I got everything working the way they should-except for the mech. secondaries. Whenever I open them up in 1st or 2nd the car sputters-not bogs-but sputters and makes no attempt to accellerate. But when I step on it when I'm in like 3 or 4th gear it takes off for a few seconds like a rocket before sputtering. When I hook up the vacuum secondaries it acts the same way. Any suggestions?

How far up are you wiring the secondaries open?

I've finally narrowed the problem down. The motor sputters when the four barrels are open after 4000. At 2000-3000 the motor just bogs and then takes off to 4000 and then sputters. It seems to be this way with the mechanical secondaries as well as the vacuum ones. It seems like its a fuel delievery issue, maybe too rich? It doesn't really make sense but maybe at those higher RPM the secondaries suck up too much fuel for the motor. I don't think its leaning out, if that would happen the car would just bog when their opened, like its supposed to.

I took some pics but I can't upload them yet. I've fixed everything except the sputtering, so I think how I wired them up isn't affecting things here.
