Sloppy Steering

I've noticed that my steering has gotten sloppy. Too much play and it seems to "swim" a little and gets blown around easily by wind or pavement. It's not firm and steady like a sports car should be, and has gotten a bit unsettling at high speeds.

Any idea what could be causing it?

Change the tie rods and bushings on the front, it will help it a little bit. However, the steering box of this car will always have a little play in it.

First part to check that fails most often is the idler arm, then the tie rods, then the ball joints. I prefer to replace all of these at once. If there's still slop in the steering, then it's the steering gear that needs adjustment. this must be done carefully because over tighten will accelerate wear.

Thanks.

I'm having the car worked on friday and I ordered new inner & outer tie rod ends, an idler arm, and pitman arm just in case any of them are bad.

They don't have the ball joints in stock, so hopefully they'll be OK when my mechanic pulls it apart.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

My 83 GSL has a bit of this as well. I was wondering what was needed to help correct it, i just figured that is was normal as its a 25 yr old car. I know for fact the springs are still original as well as the rear shocks. The front struts are 10 yrs old.

Figured i would get both springs and shocks/struts replaced to reinforce the suspension but now im thinking i should check/replace the arms, rods and joints first. Would this be an ideal way to do it??
