ON Lost they key

Can't find the key after I've had the car sitting for a year.

I'm beginning to accept my fate and wondering what my options are.

Early 78/79 RX-7

Thanks in advance.

with a 79-80 your best hope is that the key code is stamped on the passenger side (right door) lock cylinder. if yes, you can cut a key
its a 4 digit number

if no, you need a locksmith

The car isn't locked, but i won't be able to start it now.

If I manage to find the code then what do I do? Do I call Mazda?

I'm surprised they will have this info after 40+ years!

Last year my dad ran his vin on his GSLSE at the local Mazda dealership, they were able to make him a key that worked. I remember him telling me that the guy that ran it was surprised that they had it in their database. I don't know if it would work with an earlier car though, I know that a normal Vin decoder will not work on a 79 since the US vin requirements changed in 81. Hence sa and fb have different style of vins.

Also if it does work my dad got a neat sheet that told him the date and port of entry of his car, and the original dealer where it was sold new.

Yes, a locksmith should be able to cut a key for you, using this supplied code. You need to remove the interior door panel to gain access to the inside of the door and remove the cylinder. The number is stamped on the outside. I'd just take the whole cylinder in to the locksmith, that way he can try it and make sure it works.

Remove your ignition lock cylinder and drop it off at your local locksmith, no need for the nuclear option of replacing all the locks with used ones.

Easiest lock cylinder to remove is the one in the hatch. Bringing that one over to a locksmith worked for me when I lost my keys

Afaik the door and hatch cylinders have fewer pins than the ignition cylinder which could result in an improperly cut key.

If you can't find the key to your car, there are a few options you can consider:
  1. Look for the spare key: Check if you have a spare key for your car. If you do, this will save you a lot of hassle.
  2. Contact a locksmith: You can contact a professional locksmith to help you open your car and make a new key. They will use specialized tools and techniques to unlock the car and make a new key for you.
  3. Contact a dealership: You can also contact the dealership where you bought your car to see if they can make a new key for you. They may require proof of ownership before making a new key.
  4. Replace the ignition switch: If you are unable to find the key, and cannot get a new one made, you may need to replace the ignition switch. This can be a more costly option, but it will allow you to start the car with a new key.
I hope this helps!
