Owner lost the key...

So there is an RX-7 at the buddhist temple i go to. The temple actually owns this RX-7. They said that they lost the key to the car (they own around like 15 junky cars to give to families that are in need). I dont know if they have the title but could I get a Mazda dealership to get me a key somehow using the VIN number? I'm pretty sure I need the title because I just can't walk in with a VIN and demand a key.

you need proof of ownership, so they have to go there themselves to make a key

if u own a rx7 try using ur key... awhile ago i was at a party and there was 2 other FC drivers there. Somehow one of the guys keys broke and he didnt have a spare ... my key would open the doors but not turn the car over. but the other guy had a key that would start it and everything.

he's right. It's not as if they made a different key for every single car. The key designs roll over after every so many. I believe with Chrysler's it used to be something ridiculous like every 8 keys.
I'm not sure what RX's are like though.

Yea I've heard stories of the keys being interchangeable. If you're cool w/ the parts dept guy, they'll hook you up. But by the book, they can't even copy a key YOU HAVE unless you prove ownership. The cars apparently originally came w/ a 3 or 4 digit code on the original keychain that you needed to verify ownership or something like that.

My parts dept guy knows me. In fact, the whole stealership knows me. I just tell him I need the key copied, and he's like 'how many copies?"

Yes, the original keys have a code stamped on one side that Iassume is for if you need copies. This is nothing new though, I'm not sure how many of you have heard of "tryout keys". I'm glad that there's no one else with an FC within 50 miles of me

wow interchangable car keys. i think ill call the dealership today. The thing is that... somehow they might have already put 4grand into fixing the car already? I took pics of the car, it doesnt even look like its worth 400$. My brother said to have over heard them saying they got the transmission fixed for four grand but I think my brother didn't hear them right. Four grand could get you a TII, there's no way I could see a mechanic charging MONKS four grand for a transmission fix.

The less than informed that talk about interchangable keys simply have cars that some lameo used WD-40 or something simular in the locks and the locks are all gummed up.

Its that all the pins are jammed up. The lock needs to be cleaned. If left dirty and jammed up, any key would open the door... maybe even a Honda key if you forced it in.

That's why they don't work the ignition.

The Mazda key design only repeats itself every 10000 times. Since there were only about 100000 FCs made the odds of your key working someone elses properlly working locks are pretty high (thats not even including the number of wrecked and off the road for other reasons cars).
