Question So I've read over the FAQs and have the stupid question for the day right here.

Does a first gen RX-7 come with a single key for all locks, or one for the ignition and one for the exterior locks?

I recently bought an RX-7 over ebay... I've since learned to never ever do that again. There were many problems that we won't discuss, but after (FINALY) recieving my car, I was given one set of keys and drove off. I stopped at a local establishment for refreshment and as I locked the drivers side door thought to myself "Hmmmm... everything else on the car is broken, I wonder if the locks work. I checked my key in them and suprise suprise no they don't.

I'm guessing there are supposed to be two different keys, however the guy I bought the car from is mantaining that there should only be one key, and that the one key he has has always worked in the locks on the car. I'm calling bullshit since the key doesn't work on any of the three exterior locks availible. But hey, I could be wrong. I just need to know if I'm getting the bullshit run around or if there really is only supposed to be one key fits all for the fb.

Oh, while we're speaking of keys, are the glove box and storage compartment keys supposed to match? I don't have a key for either, but I'm wondering if I could have one made, or if it'd be easier to buy a replacement.

if you've tried the doors, the glovebox, the storage bins, etc. and your key doesn't fit....then it seems like maybe the ignition was changed once, and they key you have works that ignition. you need to ask the original owner for the key for EVERYTHING ELSE!.

that sucks dude. i wish you luck

i have 2 keys, one for ignition, hatch, and passenger side door, and a different one for the drivers side door. but then it was broken into at some point, i'm guessing someone tried to unlock the door with a screwdriver.

There is supposed to be one key, but the door locks are *****!
I've opened my diver's side lock with keys from 3 different 1st gens and 2 different 323's...

Execpt my trunk, which won't seem to open with a key at all...

And only the corect key will work on the glove box bin lids and ignition...

On mine I got a to have a key for the drivers side and then a key for everything else just like tempusfugitive up there. Best thing for you to do is go back to him. Smack him like the B*tch he is and demand the key. Thank goodness for the country and not having to lock your doors.

Didn't some guys here mention that you can have a key made by the dealeship
using your cars vin#?

From the factory the first gens should only need one key for everything. I only
have one key and it works on all locks.

...so it is very likely as it was mentioned that the ignition was changed and that is
why your key only works on it.

So you might want to ask the guy that sold you the car about that, and if he
does not have the key you might want to ask the mazda dealership if they can
make one.

Hope this helps!

Mine has two keys.

One for Doors. The other for ignition and hatch.

Actually, now I need new door key. I changed the doors with an 85's doors, and. . . . well, my keys don't work!

I have one for ignition and doors, and one for the rear hatch. The hatch lock went bad years ago, so I just had it replaced with a different lock.
