I hate asking this. What is a good 12A worth?

I went out and compulsively bought an FB.My first 1st gen...yay..I think?
The only reason why I bought it is it started up and ran..lol!
So,to make a long story short it may need more than I can give it,so Since it has a good Running 12A with 95 thousand Miles on it I would like to get opinions on what the engine could sell for.
It starts up and the choke works, revs to 6 grand easily on a drive.(stock everything..AC too ..1982)

Too bad,the car starts/drives/stops great. It's just the body that may be too much to repair.Frankly it wouldn't be worth the money to sink in to get it back to "pristine".

Cheers Lads, and thanks if you can give any commentary whatsoever.

My gut feeling for a good low miles 12A? $2000 or so. The rotor housings alone are worth that much...

A really good one is one you've been driving since 1980. These are priceless.

But to get back to your question, it's a shame that the cars up north have good 12As and rotting bodies and the ones down here have rust free bodies needing 12A's.

In any case, it's probably not a good idea to think of an SA or FB as an investment with an attractive price tag.

Better to use words like "compulsive" and "passion", that's the best reason to own one and keep it on the road.

I was NOT suggesting tearing down a running engine! I was pointing out that a good low mile engine like that is worth its weight in gold because it is going to have good rotor housings, and good rotors, and why tear it down when it is probably going to be good for another 100-150k as it sits? It's pre-83 so it probably won't get the dowel pin leak. Although I had a 227k '85 that didn't get the dowel pin leak either, maybe I was lucky.

I know of a few people who ask me "Got any good 12A housings?" every time I see them... And the answer is always no, 'cause I don't.

The pictures were just for Ray, since he likes that sort of thing.

I'm not selling them haha. But if you do sell it, keep it together. Around here a free turning (not running though) 12a sells for around 400-800 depending on it's mileage/condition.

I'd reckon a running example with good compression and everything included would bring AT LEAST 1200 bucks, and that would be a steal with the carb/intake/emissions and all...

Atkins is still asking $4200 for a rebuilt, with a $450 core charge.
Considering all the seals would be new, but not the main components, may give you an idea for a start asking price.

Well I Would drive it til it falls apart..BUT since I bought it,I have to Safety it.
That requires no holes in the body which I found..( I ripped off a Melon size piece of bondo under the driver's wheel well).
Someone put lipstick on this pig..I must have been drunk..heh!.
I'm so used to seeing SEC gens and this 1st gen stuff is deceiving...too many nooks nand crannies.

A few years ago I bought a running 12a with ~103,000 miles on it for $300 as just a bare keg (no intake, exhaust or accessories). I'd imagine the price has gone up a bit since then. But $2000? Ah, no. I might pay $2000 for a fully rebuilt, ported, tuned 12a... but even that would be a stretch.

I'd say around $500.00, bare keg. With all accessories, maybe $1000.00 to the right buyer who
wants a turn key, drop in solution to a missing or bad motor.

Mine has 130K of hard driving on it and still runs like new. Or as my buddy says about it, "You
have some scoot in that thing."

So yours is just broken in as long as it was cared for ok.

I just did a search last month for used engine prices on car-parts.com to get prices for my swap math. The way ChumpCar does swaps is to take the average of the 10 lowest A rated engines on car-parts.com for the engine you are taking out and the engine you are putting in. My 12A average was around $650 and there were only 7 or 8 listed with prices. Good thing for me since a 160hp S5 13B comes in around $300 using the same criteria, I have no problem getting my swap through until they change the rules.

I'm gonna say between $400-$750 usd. Depending on what all is included. I've never seen one sell for more then $750 nor will I ever buy one for more then $750. At that price it's usually for a long block with transmission. 90k to me doesn't exactly scream low mileage. 90k is about the average by me (what I run into the most). When in doubt on value start high aim low and hope to break even.

^^^^ YES!!!!!

A rotary powered Vette.

12A would fit right in, and would give you more room than that damn 4cylinder its got.

A stock 12a is hilarious fun in an MGB btw. It's been done with great success, and it's never a dull moment.

Or in a VW. I've considered trying it out in my Ghia, but I'm always brought back to "where the hell am I gonna put the radiator"
