Evil swapaholic thoughts

I'm a swapaholic. I admit it freely and openly. I have immense joy in the knowledge that the engine in a Festiva can be easily swapped out for a 1.6l SOHC or DOHC engine from a 323/Capri. Even has the same axleshafts so I can use the donor car's tranny. Or the thought that cars like the Hyundai Excel/Mitsu Precis/Eagle Summit/Dodge Colt share the same chassis as the 1st-gen DSM, right down to the engine pointing points. Heh heh heh. Or looking in the engine bay of a newer Crown Vic and thinking, hey, plenty of room for another pair of cylinders. (Direct swap to a 6.8l V10?)

Or that the '85-94 Subaru "Loyale"-chassis cars were identical 2wd vs. 4wd, right down to the hump in the gas tank to clear the rear differential. A 2wd can be converted to 4wd with no difficulty, just swap in the rear subframe, the tranny, and the driveshaft. Bringing me to my point: Today I finished yanking goodies out of my deceased '88 Subaru - today I got the pedal box, steering column, master cylinder/"hill holder" (aka cable-operated LINE LOCK! ) and - more importantly - the rear subframe assembly. I plan on obtaining a cheap 2wd model and converting it.

But I was looking, and I broke out the ol' tape measure - gee, the setup is the SAME WIDTH as the rear axle in the ol' SA22C. And it looks like the pinion flange bolt pattern is the same. And I *bet* that the rear coil-overs would bolt right in the the '7's shock towers with only a little massaging. And I know someone who'd redrill the rear drums to a 4x110 pattern instead of that awful 4x140 Subaru pattern. Or turn the drums into hubs, and I can make caliper brackets and use RX-7 rear disk brakes.

I am a sick, sick, sick individual. Anybody want a stock '80 rearend?

After I get my FC running. Now that the Subaru is out of the picture, I can have the FC towed to the shop, where it will get a radical wankelectomy (if funds allow) or maybe I'll just pop new apex seals in it and drive it. Yeah, probably that.

OTOH if my parents give me back the '89 Suby that I bought for/lent to them, before the FC is completed, then it will get the 4wd drivetrain and one of the RX-7s will have to go. Probably the FC because it's worth more money and, well, it's an automatic.

I also know the beauty of the swap.....

So far, my projects include a 16V VW powered Audi 4000 Quattro, a 350 powered RX-7, a turbo dodge (with a Dakota tranny) Datsun 1500 roadster and a turbo, fuel injected Fiat 850. I have too much free time.

At some point in time I want to swap a Viper V-10 into an early (92 or so) Dakota Sport.

I'm a swapaholic too! Check out my page for some of the swaps that I've done or been involved with.

It's only a couple of cars that have had a boinger to rotary conversion, but it still shows I have a sickness

My dad just doesn't understand why I want to drop out the V6 in his Chevy fullsize pickup for a V8, and why I make it sound so simple. LOL I've also been wondering about my daily driver, currently.. an '87 Chevy Celebrity. It's got 260k on it and I'm just wondering how much longer the drivetrain is going to soldier on. I've noticed there seem to be more and more wrecked Grand Prix GTP's around here. Hmmm... 240-ish horsepower in that car... could make one hell of a sleeper! Shouldn't be THAT complicated, seeing as how the General likes to keep platforms reletively similar.. ooh, I'm drooling again... :p

Ok, I'm a swapaholic because almost all of my thoughts center on this sort of thing.

Imagine getting a set of aluminum side housings from Racing Beat and either keeping them set up for PP or possibly trying your luck porting them for standard side port action (to make it more streetable) and building yourself a nice super lightweight 12A or 13B! Hmm, what kind of car should it go in? An Austin Mini or other micro car? A motorcycle? A jetski? A riding lawnmower? A chain saw? Er, well, I guess if you're cutting down petrified trees

Hmm, an engine that you could probably set in the engine bay yourself (by hand) that can blow the doors off ALL cars in it's class. Yeah, that's something that I'd like to swap in my MG Midget, or mountain bike, or shopvac, or drillpress, or air compressor, or weedwhacker, or go-cart, or...
